The Shuffle season is declared open

Valve has announced the post Kiev Major Shuffle dates and rules. All the teams have time until the 24th of May to work on their roster.

The post Kiev Major Shuffle starts off today, May 3, and it has a two step structure; a drop period followed by an invite period. All those who want to be eligible for an invite to The International 7 regional qualifiers or the main event must comply with the two step shuffle time frame and have to keep their roster intact until after TI7, according to Valve. Of course, those who will fail to qualify for the biggest Dota 2 event of the year are free to start the post TI7 Shuffle at any time they want.

The two steps Shuffle format will unfold as follows:

Drop Period:

The drop period is available from the 3rd of 16th of May at 00:00 PST. This is when teams can drop as many players as they want from the current roster in preparation for the invite period. Any player who hasn’t been dropped from the current roster until the 16th of May will become locked to his team and will not be able to join another squad in the invite period.

Invite Period:

The second step is the invite, or the pick up period, which will start immediately after the drop window and this is the time when teams will have to issue their invites to the players they want to add to The International 7 rosters. The Invite period will end on the May 24th, 00:00 PST. Any team that will fail to lock their final five players before the aforementioned date and time will not be considered locked for TI 7 and will lose their eligibility for an invite.

The substitute rule:

The substitute rule allows the teams to issue an invite to a player only after The International 7 qualifiers concluded and only to a player that is not participating to the event. In other words, some of those who will fail to qualify for TI7 will still have a chance to play in the event if a team desires to add them to their roster. The substitute rule was implemented in the shuffle period ahead of the Boston Major and proved to be extremely handy for the Chinese teams that struggled to secure an US visa for all their five players.

Some members of the Dota 2 community considered this rule a rather opportunistic way of enhancing a roster just before the event, but truth to be told, no team made use of it for the Kiev Major. With the International 7 taking place in Seattle, USA, we might see, however, a few teams forced to use the substitute rule again.

The International 7 general information:

The International 7 is set to be held over six days in August, from Monday the 7th to Saturday the 12th in the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington. The open qualifiers for the event will take place between June 22-25 with the regional qualifiers following shortly after, from June 26-29.
