A crushing performance from Abed Azel 'Abed' Yusop delivered the biggest upset of the Kiev Major qualifiers, with both NP and CompLexity falling to his Meepo.
Lead by the mighty Kanishka Sam 'BuLba' Sosale, the Onyx boys seemed to have found a special bond after a rough start to the year in which they had to play with a stand-in while waiting for Abed Azel 'Abed' Yusop to sort out his papers before moving to Unites States of America.
Team Onyx roster:
Mason 'mason' Verne
Abed 'Abed' Yusop
Sam 'BuLba' Sosale
Kim 'DuBu' Doo-young
Jimmy 'DeMoN' Ho
Despite their high profile players, Onyx was far from being regarded as a strong contender for the one qualifying spot from NA. And yet, they upset both NP and CompLexity Gaming to claim their tickets to Kiev. After destroying NP in the lower bracket finals with perfect team coordination and incredible plays from Abed, Onyx moved on to the winner’s finals to give the same treatment to CoL. Both NP and CoL took their chances of letting the young Filipino star to play his Meepo, a decision that cost them everything in the end. In the NP vs Onyx series, after a demoralizing game one for EnvY’s squad, Onyx were allowed to pick not only the Meepo but also Kim 'DuBu' Doo-young’s Earth Spirit, a signature hero for him since his MVP days.
Although NP had one of the stronger counters for Abed, in Winter Wyvern, her Ultimate was not making any difference, mostly to questionable target choices. CompLexity thought that they have an answer of their own and tried to counter Abed with a last pick support Bloodseker, but also failed and lost the decisive game three of the series to a triple Diffusal and double Ethereal Blade item build of Abed’s Meepo. This is not the first occasion Abed has come in for criticism at a Valve event after his Meepo was blamed for the NA boys being crushed in the Wild Card qualifier competition of The International 6.
