The Boston Major: Virtus Pro uncontested leaders of group B

The CIS scene has only one really big chance at taking the Eaglesong trophy home this fall as Virtus Pro looks hotter than ever.

Coming to Boston as one of the main favorites to take it all,  Virtus Pro didn’t disappoint their fans yesterday after putting on yet another solid show in the group stage. Called by many the group of death, group B deliveredthrilling performances last night from all its four teams. However, VP outshone everyone else again, starting with a strong performance in the opening series against NP, which ended in less than 50 minutes, and followed by an incredible comeback in the final game against Newbee.

After they took game one rather quickly with Ilya 'Lil' Ilyuk’s by-now famous Weaver support, VP almost got stomped by Newbee in game two. With over 15k in net worth and over 20k experience deficit by the 20 minute mark, Virtus Pro looked like they had to start thinking about a decisive game three. Thirty minutes into the game, Newbee’s Dragon Knight was almost immortal with his BkB, Assault Cuirass, and Blink Dagger already purchased while VP’s most threatening item was the Drow Ranger’s Aghanim’s Scepter. Yet, the Russians somehow managed to defend their barracks twice and out maneuvered Newbee with the Io-Drow relocates to make advantageous objective trades. In the end, Newbee succumbed to the relentless Russian split pressure and admitted defeat.

Known for their super aggressive tempo, Virtus Pro made a clear statement last night of their ability to play from behind and realized an incredible comeback to take the series 2-0 at the end of a long 61 minutes.

Although all the spotlights are now on VP’s amazing winners final game two, it would be totally unfair to not mention MVP Phoenix and NP’s amazing attempts at pushing themselves higher on the group B ladder. The Korean overlords look like they finally found the path to recovery after a disastrous start to the season and are again the team we all used to know. But, as last night’s games showed, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. They tried the rare unconventional pick, such as Kim 'QO' Seon-yeop’s mid lane Visage, they’ve summoned their staple picks in the form the Bristleback-Io combo and even attempted an ultra push strategy predicated on the Drow-Visage-Furion trio. But in spite of their great efforts, MVP still finished last in group B and now they face the prospect of a very difficult matchup in the main event.

Group B final standings:

1st: Russia Virtus Pro
2nd: China Newbee
3rd: United States NP
4th: Korea MVP Phoenix

If you haven’t been able to catch last night’s matches from group B, the ones highly recommended for a replay are Virtus Pro vs Newbee game two, MVP Phoenix vs NP game three and the first game between Newbee and NP.

The Boston Major group stage will resume today, December 4th at 10:00 EST/16:00 CET with group C and D. Evil Geniuses will look for a first place in group C while group D features the two times Major Champion, OG fighting to defend their Eaglesong trophy.
