Top Weekly Workshop submissions: Dota Pit Season 5 sets

With only three months left until the start of Dota Pit League Season 5, Workshop artists have started to submit their sets for the upcoming event.

From anime themes to warriors, Drow Ranger, Lina, Ogre, and Clockwerk now have more items to show off.  We hope Valve will accept these sets and put them on the market as quickly as possible. These artists can hardly wait for their work to be appreciated! Don't forget to vote for the sets that you like, and remember to leave feedback for the workshop artists that impressed you with their talents.

Blaze of the Ember Sorceress

A less conventional set was submitted a few days ago by a young workshopper at the beginning of his career. He tried to create something different compared to the other sets on the Steam market. He chose to give a warrior's aura to Lina, a member of the tribes that used fire as a weapon to defend their population. Even in the portrait, the artist drew Lina looking like Xena, the warrior princess. Although he chose to create something different, he kept the character's typical colors and flames.

I asked 'ice wolves' to share some of his thoughts regarding this set with us:

I designed this Lina set with the help of a concept artist, Adimas Susanto. He wanted to make a winter set for Lina, so he gave me the concepts and ideas to make it. It took me 2 weeks to finish it, I wanted to make it as quick as possible so it`s a bit lacking in quality. This is my 5th set and I keep improving myself so I can be better in time.

Runic Archer

Excited about the new Drow Ranger set that is totally out-of-the-box, I contacted Nateo, one of the workshop artists who works closely with Dota Pit League.

D: Hello Nateo! I saw your latest sets, and I really want to find out more about them, especially about the new Drow Ranger set. Why Drow, and what inspired you to create it?

Nateo:  It's Drow because the CEO of Dota Pit League kept pestering me to do something for Drow. About the process... it actually started out with this sketch, I was just messing around and stuff:

But then, before I finished, a workshopper came out with another Drow set for the Warhammer contest that kinda looked the same as mine, so I had second thoughts about some design elements. I rethought the set a little and ran with a theme of Odin, which led to the Nordic themes mixed in with some anime stuff.  But I didn't want to go full Nordic, either, partially because the colors seemed too different from Drow.

My first set that got in was DC's centaur set, so I pulled up some old Nordic references for the patterns, but essentially the biggest concern I had was making the set stand out. I always try to make something that has a distinct identity and isn't just generic armor. It's kinda hard to balance because if I keep too much in line with the hero's style, I run the risk of the set being too generic, but if I go too far and it turns into something else. Usually I try to think of what people would like, but for this one I just did what I wanted and it turned out better than expected.

If I could sum up this set in a sentence, it'd be "I watch too much anime."

Searsteel Nomad

One of the most eye-catching set of this week is made by Sylei and Ike, and it totally deserves our attention. Different from all the other sets on Clockwerk, Searsteel Nomad stands out by the textures and the small details that make a huge difference. I reached out to Sylei for more information about her work.

Sylei: I worked with Ike on this one, he made the concept for it which just started as a single head item for Clockwerk, which I found very nice and it suited him well (hoods for everyone!) and we turned it into a set. I think our set provides a good change of focus because of the extensive use of cloth instead of metal. Of course metal armor is still there because that's what Clockwerk is to begin with. The cog model we made for him I think stands out very well! When I choose to make a set it pretty much boils down to "would this hero wear this and does it look cool?" If the answer is yes then it will probably end up working out!

Stonebreaker's Legacy

Another set for Dota Pit League was released this week, and is waiting to be upvoted so it can be added on the Steam market.

Workshop artist's notes on the set: Crafted eons ago, and left behind in history, the tale of a powerful armor made of the purest gold and emeralds for the battle against the strongest. They tell how many Aggrons wearing it became heroes, oh yes, my friend. But now these stories are only a legend, written on the sacred rocks from the oldest Stonebreakers, which no ordinary dumb can read a word. Yet, they sing about the past times, and within, the song of the True Luck Armor, the Legacy, of the Stonebreaker family.
