RIP treasure keys 2012-2015

As announced last year, starting on the 1st of July 2015, all treasure keys in the game has expired, ending its three year legacy as the Dota2's unofficial currency.

News of the demise of the treasure keys came in August of 2014, where it was announced that treasure keys will no longer be sold by the Dota2 store and can only be used to redeem treasures; Valve also said that the keys will expire on the 1st of July 2015, today. It has been observed that not all keys has been removed with some Frostivus keys being on sale, which seems to be unintentional.

Community reaction towards this change was one of sadness, with many traders reminiscing over the treasure keys on the Dota2 Reddit and also speculating that this change might cause the Dota2 marketplace to collapse due to the lack of a common currency. In addition, a rumor has also spawned regarding the reason behind this change, stating that due to laws from a country with a significant Dota population and the way keys are being used as currency, Valve was required to remove this feature.

The market behavior for this change was expected, with the volume of treasure keys traded and price decreasing as the 1st of July approached. There was a minor abnormally in the sales of the treasure keys, just before the expiration date of the keys, two keys were bought at $6.86, presumably bought for bragging rights.
