The Summit 2: Day 1 Report: Secret dominates while EG crash

As day one of The Summit 2 LANs ends, we analyze the team's performances and take a look at the table standings. Peep inside for the match recaps, VODs and more.

Day one of The Summit 2 LANs drew to a close with Team Secret absolutely dominating the round robin while Evil Geniuses, the defending champions, lost all three of their matches and find themselves at the bottom of the table. With those defeats EG has no chance to finish in the top two of the round robin stage (the top two teams move directly to the semi-finals while the other four battle it out in the quarters). As it is with most LANs the first day faced a lot of trouble ranging from PC issues to server lags. This led to a heavily delayed schedule which meant that the final match of the day: Cloud9 versus Vici Gaming was postponed to the next day.

The issues however, did not break the form of Vici Gaming and Cloud9 as they both finished with two wins without dropping a single match and are at joint second position. Team Tinker had the toughest teams to face on the first day and expectedly, they lost to Secret Team and Vici Gaming but managed to get the better of Evil Genuises. Not Today didn't have a good day either and ended up losing all three of their matches and share the bottom of the table with EG. Scroll down to get a recap of the matches played out on the first day.

Team Secret vs. Evil Geniuses - 1:0

EG tried to contest the offlane, putting up a duallane against Secret's Void and Witch Doctor. They were unable to reliably keep Kuroky from farming though and in fact gave up first blood. Arteezy however managed his safelane well, grabbing an early networth lead in the game. Puppey's Enigma remained largely uncontested throughout the early game, giving him an early Mek that made it difficult for EG to engage. The rather pick-off heavy line-up was unable to find proper openings and were only able to trade farm quite unfavorably. Arteezy and Fear could keep up in terms of farm but the nature of Secret's heroes made it easier for the Europeans to execute their strategy. Simbaaa on his Doom caught up with a Midas and his ulti alone nullified the impact of an entire EG hero.

Secret farmed efficiently, taking objective as soon as they deemed it appropriate and without many losses, pushing EG back further and further. The North-Americans had only a few answers to the big teamfight control ultimates from Secret's side and eventually the farm difference was too big for EG to catch up. The North-Americans could only watch as Secret took down their base.

Team Tinker vs. Team Secret - 0:1

Team Tinker got a lot of early momentum with good rotations from their Axe. Pajkatt was able to get a lot of pick-offs, leaving Secret with only little farm and space. Secret was able to make up for that by taking towers and a Midas on Slark though, keeping up with Tinker. Loda opted for an early BKB, but was still fairly squishy and vulnerable to the physical damage and minus armor coming out of Dazzle's Weave and a Medaillon. Despite Tinker's momentum, Secret was able to turn two teamfights into their favor and with their pushing power, they immediately took mid rax, forcing a gg by Tinker.

Vici Gaming vs. Team Tinker - 1:0

Tinker kicked things off with a very early pre-creepspawn first blood, picking off two VG supports. Despite this early setback though, the Chinese managed the laning stage fairly well, catching up with farm and getting a few pick-offs themselves. While Tinker pulled ahead in overall farm, Vici pressured the map, taking towers and gaining map control. The Europeans did not use their time as efficiently as Vici did, falling behind in farm and not getting any objectives. The pushing power from Vici was tough to handle for Tinker, as every lost teamfight meant yet another objective for the Chinese. Tinker themselves had quite the pushing potential as well with the Troll ultimate, but was unable to capitalize on it as their early game passiveness left all tier 1 towers standing. Teamfights went back and forth, but when Tinker failed in a push attempt with no buybacks on their cores left and their tier 4 towers exposed, they called the gg.

Not Today vs. Cloud9 - 0:1

The Peruvians had a good start into the game, rotating a lot with their Wraith King and Ancient Apparition combo, thus securing themselves stable lanes and farm on their cores. Smash on his Death Prophet was able to put a lot of pressure on the map and Cloud9 tried to farm up crucial items on their heroes before engaging in teamfights. Trading heroes back and forth, it was still Not Today that held the upper hand, gaining more and more map control. C9 was able to hold highground though and eventually traded a set of racks with a set of racks of their own. From there on out, C9 took control of the game, especially because the farm on their side was distributed in a favorable fashion, peaking on their cores, whereas Not Today got a lot of farm on their support Ancient Apparition with an underfarmed Wraith King.

The teamfight control by C9 proved to be too difficult for NoT to handle and the nature of Cloud9's line-up allowed them to win the game in the lategame.

Cloud 9 vs. Evil Geniuses - 1:0

Evil Geniuses got ahead in the laning stage with a crucial first blood on Fata's Puck and a solid offlane performance by Universe on the Tidehunter, who was able to keep two C9 heroes in check. Arteezy pulled ahead in farm quite quickly, but Cloud9 recovered from their laning stage quite well, keeping up with the farm. C9 utilized the map well, avoiding getting picked off while simultaneously finding farm on their cores. Fata proved to be very elusive on his Puck, creating a lot of openings for his team. EternalEnvy on his Anti-Mage was able to eventually outfarm Arteezy's Naga Siren, and with two BKBs on C9's side in addition to Omniknight's Repel and a Linken's Sphere, AM proved to be too hard to take down. C9 proceed to take crucial objectives and after one good teamfight, C9 took bottom rax. Only Arteezy remained alive and with the help from Bloodlust, Cloud 9 was able to take the throne before Evil Geniuses line-up respawned.

Evil Geniuses vs. Team Tinker - 0:1

Team Tinker started the match off well by farming well on all three lanes and simultaneously keeping EG's Anti-Mage in check. The Europeans were however unable to keep this momentum going, as they gave up a few crucial kills. Bulba on his Puck especially got picked off here and there, being unable to acquire a timely Blink Dagger. Tinker however showed good coordination and stand-in Loda farmed quite well on his Terrorblade, pulling ahead in farm. Tinker got the upper hand and was able to keep on pressuring Arteezy. Eventually, the team even managed to kill the Radiant's courier which carried two components of Arteezy's Battlefury, delaying his farm by three minutes. Tinker got a lot of momentum going for them and the team managed to push in two lanes. EG fought themselves back though, trading favorably and high valued kills on Terrorblade and Brewmaster.

Tinker tried pushing in once more but EG was able to hold their own. The North-Americans fought back and it looked like they were able to tilt things into their favor again, but especially Loda was too much to handle for EG after all.

Not Today vs. Team Secret - 0:1

Not Today ran a dual-lane mid with the Phantom Assassin, while Smash was able to safely farm the bottom lane on his Invoker. The Peruvians were able to win two lanes this way, but Secret secured farm on their safelane Tidehunter and Puppey's Enigma remained once more uncontested. Both led the networth chart and crucial item pick-ups like the Mekansm enabled Secret to take objectives and teamfights. The Europeans displayed better team coordination and teamfight execution, taking objectives efficiently without giving away too much. Not Today was pressured into their own base and the Peruvians had no answer to Secret's teamfight potential, despite a farmed Invoker. Secret takes yet another win.

Not Today vs. Vici Gaming - 0:1

VG went for a fairly standard draft except for the off lane Riki on iceiceice. On the other hand, Not Today got the trademark Ember Spirit for Smash and surprisingly went for an aggressive tri-lane with Clockwerk (MiHawk) athought that was to change soon as the supports rotated top. That didn't work out too well for Not Today as Riki evaded ganks pretty effectively. The roaming Mirana (fy) worked out perfectly for VG and by the 7 minute mark, Ember had already died thrice and Morphling (iwobeka) the once. This basically meant Naga (Black^) gained a significant advantage in the net worth table. VG countered Ember perfectly initiating on him with song of siren leading to an arrow and smoke screen thereafter getting guaranteed kills on Ember Spirit.

VG was slightly casual in their mid game giving up a few unnecessary kills to Not Today but they never really lost their control. Morphling had a decent net worth but couldn't make an impact as much as Riki or Naga. Not Today tapped out at around 30 minutes after VG had taken the mid barracks.
