MVP, Arrow take SEA qualifiers' top seeds; final two teams still undecided

The groupstage of the SEA qualifiers of The International 4 has just concluded, with Arrow and MVP.Phoenix earning a spot in the upper bracket of the playoffs. As for the Lower Bracket, a tiebreaker is required to solve the three-way tie between MiTH.Trust, Mineski and Orange.

Arrow Gaming secured a playoff spot early, boosted by a flawless first day record. They won their first match today as they stomped through Zephyr, and that guaranteed them to advance into the next stage. The day isn't perfect for them though, as they dropped a match against MiTH.Trust. They still have a non-bearing game against Scythe coming up during the time of publication.

MVP was a pleasant surprise, making use of their momentum from yesterday to showcase a 3-0 showing in the second half of the group stage. After dropping two of their first three matches, they found themselves with at least a second place finish as they sport a 7-2 record. They started today with convincing wins against Execration and First Departure, and ended it with a crucial win against Mineski that could have sent the two on a tiebreaker match for second place.

Mineski was instead pushed to a three-way tie with MiTH.Trust and Orange. The latter two teams also had their chances to advance directly into the playoffs. Trust started their day with big wins over Mineski and Arrow, but then succumbed against Rex Regum Qeon on their last. Orange, as Mineski, struggled today and finish with 1-2. The Malaysian team arguably had the easiest day among the three, as all their opponents have turned out to be non-playoff teams.

The losses of those three teams guaranteed Arrow a top two finish regardless of their last game, as an Arrow defeat against Scythe would still have them tied up for the top two slots. The latter team, while being a pre-tournament favorite, has had another disappointing performance as they lost two of their first three games today. MVP will be joining Arrow as the group top-notchers, and they will both head into the upper bracket finals.

As for the third and fourth playoff spots, tiebreaker matches are required due to the three-way tie. The head-to-head results between the teams could have mitigated the issue, but the qualifier rules do not take these results into account. Thus, the three teams will now face each other once again, aiming to earn their place in the Lower Bracket of the playoffs.

The winner of the SEA qualifier will get an outright slot into the very prestigious The International 4, while the runner-up will get to compete against other regional runner-ups in the wildcard tournament. Both of those tournaments will be held in Seattle this coming July.
