WPC-ACE Day 3 Update: Tiebreaker Information announced; Cloud9 jumps to first place

After a disappointing performance in the first two qualifier days, Cloud 9 finishes strong in the last as they won both of their matches to clinch a spot in WPC-ACE's LAN playoffs. The second team heading to China will be decided in a best-of-one, three-way tiebreaker between Alliance, Empire and Sigma.

UPDATE: The tiebreakers for the second qualifying spot have been confirmed by WPC. The three matches will be played tomorrow, 14 April, from 14:00CET/21:00CST onwards in 3 best of 1s. With all but two matches within the first two days ending in a draw, the third and final day of the WPC-ACE qualifier had a paradigm shift and had three out of the four matches finishing with a victor. The start was not so different though, as the two teams who managed to take a win in the first two days drew their match-up. Alliance easily took the first game with a dominating Ember Spirit and Shadow Fiend, but then Sigma scored a win for themselves after an equally impressive 23-minute rout.

And here is when it got interesting: with both Alliance and Sigma needing just a draw in their last game, they both managed to lose against the teams who performed the worst in the last two days. Fnatic and Cloud9 both managed to take convincing 2-0 victories against Alliance and Sigma respectively. Prior to that match, the two former teams were having mediocre performances in this qualifier, each sporting a record of one draw and one defeat.

It was Cloud9 who got the momentum going, as they won 2-0 against Fnatic in the last match of the round-robin qualifiers. The win catapulted them to a solo lead with five points, securing their slot in LAN playoffs to be held in China next month. Alliance and Sigma's defeat also left them tied-up with another team, Empire. The three teams will have best-of-one tiebreakers to determine the second placed team. There is no schedule disclosed yet at the moment.

Most matches in the last day were one-sided. Aside from Fnatic and Alliance's first game, the other seven games on that day finished at an average time of 30 minutes. Five of those seven matches also featured at least one hero in the winning team not dying even once.

While a seemingly complicated three-way tiebreaker seems to be problematic, the situation could have gone a lot worse if Cloud9 and Fnatic's match-up ended just a little differently. If Fnatic actually managed to draw even on the match with Cloud 9, then we would have witnessed a far more complex five-way tiebreaker as all teams will end up with four points.

This is not Cloud 9's first venture into China. Then known as Speed Gaming, they have qualified for G-League 2013 and they also competed in the Fengyun Championship back in December last year. They finished fifth out of eight teams in G-League, and were eliminated in the quarterfinals match in Fengyun. In both cases, it was TongFu who eliminated them with the score of 2-1.

The $250,000 championship phase of the WPC-ACE will be held in Shanghai, wherein Cloud9 and the winner of the western tiebreaker will be joining the top six teams of the eastern qualifiers scheduled from 22 May to 3 June. The eastern qualifier is still ongoing.
