First Departure takes GEST September in five

In an all-Singapore Grand Finals of the last GEST of 2013, First Departure overcomes Team Impervious after a full five game series to take the title and $1,000.

Match report

Game 1:

First Departure went for an extremely teamfight oriented line-up, drafting both Magnus and Elder Titan. On the other hand, Impervious opted for more ganking ability with Nyx Assassin and Wisp and they started out fairly well after an early first blood in the Radiant's jungle. Both teams managed a good start on their carries with Alchemist getting his Midas up and running before 5 minutes and Anti-Mage keeping up nicely. However, Impervious was the better team in terms of killing with the aggressive Timbersaw.

A smoke gank on the Anti-Mage didn't go as planned for Impervious as he blinked away at the last second, but they claimed the lives of FD's other four as well as the Aegis afterwards. First Departure spent most of their time grouping up, waiting for Meracle to farm up his Anti-Mage with Battlefury. However, Impervious was not about to let them catch-up in gold with the Midas-duo of Alchemist and Lone Druid. 20 minutes in and both of those heroes were already mowing down FD's tier-2 towers with no response coming out from Meracle and company.

FD smoked into the Dire jungle, found Timbersaw and killed him off as well as the Wisp. Impervious tried to push the issue and finish the game, but a nice initiation from FD resulted in nearly a team-wipe with Alchemist being sole survivor. Despite the small setback, Impervious was far enough ahead to keep the pressure on. Meracle gave his best shot against the onslaught, but he too, fell before the Alchemist and game 1 went to Impervious.

Game 2:

Impevious went for a more aggressive line-up this time around, securing themselves the CK + Wisp combo as well as the Templar Assassin. As for First Departure, they kept true to their all-out aggressive style with Nyx Assassin, Lifestealer and Timbersaw.

FD was first to make a move, wrapping around to pick-off the offlane Elder Titan but paid dearly as Impervious got two return kills on Timbersaw and Crystal Maiden. Three prolonged teamfights broke out in bottom lane saw both teams trading kills left and right with ruthless aggression. FD came out on top of the bloodbath, killing off the cores of Impervious multiple times and pulling further ahead after each fight.

Impervious grouped up top to look for a fight, but it was FD who stood tall after killing off 4 Radiant heroes. Despite the advantages, FD only managed to take a melee barrack on top, unable to break through the resilience of Impervious. However, there was only so much Impervious could do with such a huge deficit. They could not withstand the third wave of push from FD and finally called the "gg".

Game 3:

It was FD's turn to show off what they can do with a Wisp, drafting and pairing him with the Sven. Meanwhile, Impervious mixed things up a little bit with a very greedy draft. They later put the Alchemist on support role for some extra defensive maneuver, leaving Weaver as the main damage dealer. This change turned out to be a wise one as the now-roaming Alchemist and Visage managed to secure first blood for Puck against the Nyx Assassin.

Impervious went a bit too aggressive in mid lane, giving away a few kills to FD who desperately needed those. While Meracle struggled to find a foothold with his Sven, his counterpart in the name of Weaver kept farming away on the other side. A 3-man Dream Coil from Puck secured three kills for Impervious and things didn't look too well for FD, being forced to buyback and defend their bottom tier 3.

However, Impervious gave Meracle some much needed space to get his MoM and BKB up. FD bounced back nicely on the back of the BKB-ed Sven, equalizing the killscore and getting themselves back into the game. Just when it looked like they might deal a decisive blow, FD's Wisp disconnected and they decided to go on without him and give up the Aegis as a result. They did not miss a single step despite that setback, capitalizing on Puck's mistake to take away the Aegis as well as his life.

Sven kept getting bigger and bigger by the minute and he had no problem whatsoever chewing through the Dire heroes. The inevitable finally came nearly 50 minutes into the game as FD forced out the "gg" call from Impervious and moved one step closer to the GEST September title.

Game 4:

Impervious went for another teamfight line-up with 3 big AoE ultimates from Gyro, Shadow Fiend and Disruptor. On the other side, FD drafted a fairly standard dual-core line-up centered around Morphling and LIfestealer.

First blood went to FD, ganking the solo mid Shadow Fiend with their roaming supports and secure the lane advantage for Puck. With the level advantage, Puck solo killed Shadow Fiend once he got Dream Coil up, setting Chibix3 even further back. Despite the slow start, Impervious was able to bounce back nicely with some well-timed ganks. Chibix3 realized he could pull off a Blink Dagger-ed Shadow Fiend and he did just that, getting a Blink before upgrading boots and started rolling with his team. The overwhelming chasing / disengaging power coming out from Impervious resulted in a killscore lead of 10-4 going into mid-game.

Despite having the Chen on their side, FD lost all outer towers by the 25-minute mark and was in no position to contest Roshan, giving an uncontested Aegis to Impervious. Some overconfidence and miscalculatiosn from Meracle costed him his life twice, but instead of capitalizing on those mistakes, Impervious overextended themselves inside the Dire base and lost the Aegis without claiming even a tier-3 tower. The big breakthrough for Impervious came with the Aegis and Cheese, which helped them push down the mid barracks and retreat safely.

Big play from Meracle down in the bottom lane, single-handedly pushed down the melee barrack and killed off the Naga in the process. Impervious was not at all too happy with that as they grouped up top to take another set of barracks. In the end, Shadow Fiend and Gyrocopter were just too big for Meracle to handle and ninjaboogie took down the Dire Ancient with his Gyro to take the series to a decisive Game 5.

Game 5:

Impervious went for an all-out pushing line-up with Lone Druid, Chen and Vengeful Spirit. However, in doing so, they gave away both Batrider and Dark Seer to FD. Meracle rounded up the Grand Final with a last pick Spiritbreaker.

Batrider was first to die in mid lane to a rotate gank from Impervious, but quickly got the return kill once he stacked up enough Napalm on Timbersaw. Using Chen's creep and Venge, Impervious pushed down top with ease. That was until FD made the rotations and killed off the the whole pushing squad. Impervious kept trading tower for kills and it set them back immensely in term of levels.

After a short period of farming up, First Departure took an uncontested Roshan and decided to go in, but was met with resilient resistance from Impervious. They slowly sieged the Dire base with some success, pushing down the melee barrack after a few waves. The decisive push was much easier, however, with mass Necrobooks on almost everyone from FD. Impervious called "gg" shortly after and First Departure is your GEST September champions!
