Dota 2 evolves again with patch 6.87

The new patch notes have been released and they bring huge changes to the Dota 2 mechanics.

A plethora of new items, adjustments to the terrain and hero reworks will make the rapidly approaching qualifiers for the Manila Major a nightmare for all participants.

Scheduled to go live in a day or two, the new 6.87 comes just in time for the Manila Major Qualifiers which are due to commence on April 29th. Considering the number of changes that the 6.87 patch brings, players, casters and fans alike will struggle as they have only three days to adjust.

The patch brings a reworked All Pick for the ranked mode by introducing a 15 second ban phase where each player will vote for a different hero. Afterwards, half of the heroes that were voted on will be randomly selected and banned, although by all accounts this is the feature that will impact the competitive scene the least. Scan ability has been introduced to each team and it will be available on the minimap UI.

Scan:

  • Scans a targeted 900 AoE for 8 seconds. Indicates whether there are enemy heroes in that area during the 8 seconds.
  • Starts on cooldown and has a global team-wide cooldown of 4.5 minutes
  • Does not consider units inside the Roshan Pit, but does consider Smoked units. Does not show how many heroes there are, just if there are any enemies. Enemies do not know when your team casts it.

In the general updates tab, changes worthy of mention is the new armor aura granted to allied heroes by towers, reworked HP, strength, and intelligence for heroes, and the removal of the initial experience from the starting bounty rune. Captain's Mode pick time and bonus time are modified with an adjusted order for picks in the final phase, and Captain’s Mode welcomes back Riki.

Moving to the newly introduced items, there are seven additions starting with the 7,195 gold Bloodthorn to a few extremely interesting starting items and a new consumable.

Tome of Knowledge:

  • Costs: 150 gold
  • Use: Grants you 425 experience.
  • Starts out of stock, increments stock every 10 minutes

Five heroes have received shiny Ahagnim’s Scepters, but possibly the most intriguing addition here is the fact that Storm Spirit might be back in the new meta.

Storm Spirit:

  • Causes Electric Vortex to be a 475 AoE ability around your hero.
  • Requires vision over the units to affect them.

From the heroes that already had the Scepter option Earthshaker and Gyrocopter’s ultimates have been reworked:

Earthshaker:

  • Enchant Totem becomes a 900 range ground target ability. Causes you to jump in the air and land at the target spot, casting enchant totem there. Self casting the ability will make it behave in the original form, without jumping.

Gyrocopter:

  • Adds a Side Gunner, fires an attack automatically at random enemy units within 600 AoE every 1.4 seconds. Same firing rules as Rocket Barrage, but does not attack while invisible and is disabled by Break.
