IEM Gamescom: Day 1 recap

The first day of the Intel Extreme Masters at Gamescom closed out with EnVyUs dominating the competition.

CS:GO's inaugral return to the Intel Extreme Masters has seen some exciting games in a new format not seen in the entirity of the game's history. Each of the five teams are given four lives to start off the tournament; for each match lost, that number is reduced by one, and if they run out of lives, they are out of the tournament. Furthermore, matches are not predetermined. as the winner of the previous match gets to choose who plays next, and the viewers get to vote for the map to be played.

The first match of the day was nV and TSM, where the French team took the win on de_cobblestone 16:11. As the winners, EnVyUs chose mousesports and Renegades to face off next, this time on de_dust2 as chosen by the polls. The Austrailian team struggled to do anything against their opposition, winning only two rounds before mousesports got to sixteen.

For their pick, mousesports chose Counter Logic Gaming to fight SK Gaming on Overpass. SK took a dominating lead in the first half, and while CLG made a valiant effort to comeback, their opponents managed to close out 16:11. Renegades were forced to play again in the next map, this time against TeamSoloMid on de_mirage where they recieved another thrashing, 16:6. The final match of the day was nV/mouz, where nV showed their skill once again by taking down the Germans in close 16:13 match.

SK Gaming and EnVyUs closed out the day with their lives intact, while TSM and mouz lost one. Renegades lost half of their lives for the tournament, meaning that they only be able to lose one more match before being eliminated from the event.
