sGPL: TreK vs Mondragon

[s]sgpl[/s]Probably one of the most interesting matches in the league was to be played yesterday. Two favorites, Germany Mondragon and Sweden TreK, both from the templars of twilight clan faced each other in a best out of 3 match.

Game 1 - Forbidden Zone
TreK chose Protoss, starting upper left (10-11 o'clock) versus Mondragon, Zerg, upper right (13-14). Mondragon went for a second hatchery and an evolution chamber quite early in the game. TreK builds a stargate, produces a corsair and starts to harass some overlords. Fortunately for Mondragon, his overlords were quite well spread and he is able to get up some hydralisks in this main quite soon.

He upgrades to overlord drop and expands his first, natural expansion right below his main. TreK keeps on harassing as hydralisks are defending the overlords the best they can. Mondragon builds a second expansion, below his first one. The map control was somewhat divided in the middle of the map - The Swede controlling the left part of it, and the German player controlled the right part of it. The first ground unit attack was two reavers in a shuttle, heading for Mondragons main. Fredrik sent in a corsair just before attacking, making sure no defending forces were there. But both hydralisks and now even mutalisks stood ready to meet his dropship, so the cancels the attack and starts warping his own natural expansion instead.

Mondragon with about 15 hydralisks and 12 mutalisks is heading against the new-built Protoss expansion, but he doesn't reach it in time. TreK already built up some cannons and had his reavers there, plus some templars. To strike there wouldn't be the first choice of a zerg player at that moment, so he does like TreK and backs off.

"...high templars, who change the mode of the hydralisks from "blood thirsty" to "let's get the fuck out of here"

The corsairs keep on sweeping the map for overlords and expansions, while Mondragon is building his second expansion, below his first one. A nice little nydus channel is to be seen at his first expansion, leading into the main.

Anyway, those mutalisks are now turning into 12 guardians, and they attack TreK outside his main.

But TreK is well protected by cannons and especially high templars, who change the mode of the hydralisks from blood thirsty to "let's get the fuck out of here". Mondragon lost almost all his forces to the psionic storms, cannons and the corsairs. But while this is going on, a 4 shuttle reaver / goon / templar drop was unloaded into the middle of Mondragons expansion drones, destroying lots of them and some sunkens. It takes a while for Mondragon to notice it, but he successfully kills the attacking units but the shuttles get away.

Not an easy task
This is not an easy task for any of the players to win now, still quite equal in the game. TreK kept on controlling the left side of the map and Mondragon the right side of it. Mondragon now had 4 expansions up and running and TreK had 2. But something sneaky had seen the down right hatchery... A probe! In the shadows of the expansion, a pylon was warping. Now a gateway as well, no wait, two of them! And 2 cannons!

Mondragon built more guardians and had 1-1 in hydralisk upgrades by now. He was upgrading speed and attack on ultralisks in his new-built ultralisk cavern. The game continued with both players taking turns attacking each other's expansions. TreK made a drop at Mondragon's, while some ultralisks and hydras were attacking his own.

More and more cannons are to be seen, especially down right at Mondragon's hatchery, where the drones just kept on collecting minerals because they were unknowing of the terror that soon would be unleashed at them. 4 shuttles were now heading their way, containing dark templars and reavers. The dark templars killed everything in it's way, erasing the whole expansion and all the "what-is-going-on?"-drones with it.

As Mondragon had lost some of his expansions, he was now running out of minerals. He collects and motivates his forces for a last try of attacking one of TreK's bases. 12 cannons, dark archons and some dark templars were slaughtering zergs as they were attacking in a row. Not too hard, so to say. The game lasted for more than 30 minutes and ended in an advantage for TreK in units, psi and economics.

Game 2 - Harassing
The second game was played at Dahlia of Jungle. TreK (9) vs Mondragon (6). This game was a short one, filled with harassing and sneaking from TreK's side. It began with a scouting SCV, just as Mondragon was about to take his own gas, the SCV took it before him. 3 drones attacked the refinery and killed it, but then the SCV took it again! This time Mondragon had some zerglings ready and killed it quite fast.

While Mondragon expands to get some better economics, TreK built a factory to the right of Mondragon's main, and liftoffs and floats it in. He produces some vultures and attacks, but they are stopped by zerglings and sunkens. The moment after this attack was stopped, 2 wraiths are incoming. They're starting to harass overlords and drones, as more of them are coming in. Mondragon got up a hydralisk den and some hydras, but couldn't hold off long against the vulture / wraith combination, and the victory of the sneaky bastard was confirmed. TreK won the match with 2 wins in a row, taking the lead in Group 1. GG!
