New Ranking by GG.net (5793 reads, 28 replies, 1 year ago)
The ranking from GG.net as of the moment is inaccurate and as well as outdated imo. I think it would be easier to manage the ranking system if it is patterned next to the pound for pound ranking from boxing. So, instead of hundreds of teams we only get 1-20 rankings based from fan votes and votes from editors from different DotA sites.

Do you guys think this type of ranking is better?

if the ranking system will be based on votes then expect all chinese teams to make it in the list.

this topic has been discussed a month ago and there's no need to change it because the system used by gg.net is by far the most accurate(based on gosubets).

sorry for not knowing about a similar thread. anyhow, it still does not represent the "real"/rightful ranking of teams, imo. And, about the votes, there is more weight in the editors vote and like a small portion based on fan votes ofc, that would be more "less-biased".

Well, the ranking is based purely on a mathematical calculus. The more games the teams play against ranked teams, the more points are added or subtracted. So it's not about popularity or preference. The problem is that in order to make this accurate for the teams from China and Asia in general they would have to have, in short, a new crew who speaks Chinese (etc.) and enters beforehand the gosubets. With the teams from Europe and the US, it's no problem because the GG.net crew can simply speak directly to the players and teams about what games are coming. So, it's just much easier for GG.net, because they aren't so connected to the Chinese, etc. scenes, to keep track of what games are happening.

The Chinese scene is no easy task to follow and be up to date with. We do try to do what we can but I understand we fail sometimes. But I can say with that it is much better now than a year ago.

#4 Yeah definitely -- they cover many games and it is altering the list. But what may be problematic still is keeping track of all the different games, whereas for US and European games these are GG.net's familiar terrain. People will have to stay on the Chinese scene closely for it to be accurate. However, that's not so easy because of the language barrier, distance, etc. They probably can't ask the teams or players personally (zsmj, soso.on, 820, etc.) when the upcoming games are in order to get them in for the gosubets.

What kind of mathematical calculus will put a team like competo at 6th position in the overall ranking ... obviously a failed one.

Dude instead of providing arguements in support of this ranking system people like you "who are regualar in following the pro dota scene" should try to propose a new system.

And in any semi decent ranking system a team like Competo should not even make into top 20 of the World.

"People like you"

"should try to propose"

LOL, you kidding?

Go f'n tell somebody else what to do. I'm not here to do your bidding.

You also misunderstand that I am supporting this system. I actually don't care about it at all. It is something else, though, to explain its reasoning.

easy ..

choose 5 dota pros from renowned teams, 5 members of stuff or just respected dota personalities and they vote every month 5-10 teams top10 giving points for placement .. in the end sort the teams by points + add commentaries of people that voted etc. .. great system already working well in cod/css scene

It's not my bidding first of all. I just opened a random thread and felt like commenting on it.

2ndly I dont post on these forums much but I do visit them from time to time and whenever i open any thread then there are some common tards like you who are regularly posting and arguing with one another. Maybe too passionate about the game or watever the reason maybe so if you can talk all the talk then why not just walk a little aswell ?

Anyone with reasonable iq will agree with me on this that your post is meant to support this ranking system but incase if I misunderstood you then its ok just ignore my threads.

problem with our ranking:

1. We don't/can't cover ALL games played.
2. if place 20 wins vs place 19 they get points, while due to the lack of coverage of the Chinese/Asian scene(improved though!), they have less gosubets compared to the Europeans thus less games/chances for point-trading.
3. Asians rarely play against Europeans so it is highly unlikely to get a Chinese top 3 (as many people would assume is correct) due to European teams NOT LOSING to the Chinese. The only reason this is possible if the potential top three clans from China play many more games (and win all/most of it), thus having a higher point average then the European teames. (in the ranking system this will cause the Chinese teams that lose more often, skilled or not, to be below the European teams that lose often (because they lose more points due to more games played).

problem with:
choose 5 dota pros from renowned teams, 5 members of stuff or just respected dota personalities and they vote every month 5-10 teams top10 giving points for placement .. in the end sort the teams by points + add commentaries of people that voted etc. .. great system already working well in cod/css scene.

Is that this is not a ranking system, but an opinion from a select group of people. Thus not being as objective as possible (I'm not saying our ranking is correct, but its objective (especially after we started picking up more of the Chinese gosubets)

problem with:
I think it would be easier to manage the ranking system if it is patterned next to the pound for pound ranking from boxing. So, instead of hundreds of teams we only get 1-20 rankings based from fan votes and votes from editors from different DotA sites.

Is that this will NOT choose the best/higher ranked teams, but the crowd's favorite, which is much more important in boxing than in DotA. For example if KS.int would still be here, many people would vote on them due to them liking that team, instead of who beat who.

One possible solution is keeping a seperate ranking for the European scene, the Asian-China scene and the Chinese scene. But the problems with this come when you get international tournaments.

conclusion: With the differences of amount of tournies played in the regions, the fact that a team from 1 region doesn't play too often against another region and the constant switching of teams/players, makes it pretty much imposible to have a correct and 100% objective ranking system.

@ 17

Dude just explain this that how can a team like Competo be at # 6 in ur ranking system ?

It's a very simple question that needs to be answered. If you answer this question then there is no need for rest of the details that you have mentioned.
