some heroes can carry/gank or carry/push at the same time.

Nice read.

It's interesting to note how the heroes that fall in more than one category are usually the ones that are considered dangerous, and are as a result high on the pick/ban list. Examples - Rhasta (pushing/ganking), Earthshaker (turtling/ganking), Slardar (ganking/turtling [on the carrying role]), and a few others.

But there's also other strategies that you don't mention - one is to always try to be the rock to their scissors; namely, to try and counter directly instead of generally. For instance, counter their heroes, or, for example, try and counter their push strat directly with stopping power, for lack of a better term, such as Pit Lord, who isn't strictly suitable for any lineup of the three kinds you mention otherwise. Push to push countering also works since some good pushers are also good defenders, with their summons and AoE, like Enigma or Rhasta, while a lane that is pushed most of the time prevents your own towers from being in danger often, and has the added benefit that it enables you to defend with ease (you can see the push coming from a long way off).

Of course, all these could arguably be called refinements. Otherwise, it's a nice intro for strategic thinking, and the rock-paper-scissors is a nice concept to bear in mind when judging balance issues.

nice post but I have to disagree. In my opinion you can qualify push and gang strat but turtling has many shapes. You have the 52e turtling like mass aoe disable and winning team fights but you have the 3lane push strats which I would call turtling aswell but they are totally different only same aspect is the getting late game heros fat. And atm good turtling >all it simply has more hero choices then other strats so you can easily counter push AND gank and still pick the strat you want. Only thing that can stop turtling besides better turtling is a very good combo of gank and push heros and about 2 semi-carries I would mostly compare it to TR strats.

Looks like you're so bored at home eh?

Anyway, good points. Though there are still a lot more going on in the picking and banning phase of CM. Nice job mate.

L3vaThiaN- (Strategist DotA)
This thread is so outdated (yeah even if it was written ... after my post) that I can't even begin to describe it. Rock Paper Scissors does not exist in DotA after the appearance of the Pipe-Jango-Meka+Force Staves on supports and with the add of certain recent (to me, unoriginal and not really needed but I'm no IeFrog) like Shadow Demon (Soul Catcher, skillable Purge) or the remakes on others like Invoker's stats boost, we see that almost no team uses totally one tactic.
On a side note, there are more things to do like double jungling etc.
I absolutely expect people to say "but double jungling is a way to gank/turtle".
Oh really Sherlock? Then what's left to do besides turtle when needed, gank, push and avoid feeding in DotA? It's just "avoid feeding" can't be named a Strategy, can it?
