A professional, especially in sports. In relation, we can say that Dota is an E-sport and yet we can say all players playing in competitive games are pros?
How about those players playing pub which could play and understand the game far above than those other professional players. Are this pub players have no right to be called pros until they could play in competitive games? Or in other way, are professional players have the right to claim a tag "Pro" even they don't have the skill and talent in the game (never get a single win)?

well define pro. if you say professional then its the guys whose making money out of dota.

but in dota world pro doesnt mean that. it means that youre good at playing the game. so, if you can get 30-0 in a decent game that would make you a pro candidate.

i hate ppl who takes the word literally. the word professional doesn't have one meaning right? it doesn't mean that if you're pro, you are automatically earning money out of something you are doing. when you search for a word in a dictionary, does it have only one meaning?

pro comes from professional,
professional is related to profession (a job)
profession was mostly used back in the days where it was easy to "do something =d" such as blacksmith, baker, butcher etc.

So, a professional gamer is a gamer that games for his living (hence it being his profession)

People call skilled gamers pro's when the show that they are very good, this is because being good is linked with professional gamers.

conclusion: there is a difference between calling some one a "pro gamer" and a gamer actually BEING a professional gamer =)

Its cute tho that you think there are people playing publics who are better than the elite players (ill call em elites since they are not pro's due to as soo many others have shown earlier means u have to make money from it.).

It is just as when i was a noob myself and was playing my bnet pubs and thought.. "hm i know what all hotkeys to all heros are so i guess i cant get much better at this game except for lasthitting... i might actually go ask loda if i can join SK."

but im sure with time you will notice that there are far more to dota than what u see in publics, and as even kuroky said after SMM... even he has much more to learn about dota.

or
2.having or showing great skill.

Technically speaking Zeyall is correct but in these days "pro" is also used as a word to describe a player who is highly skilled in the game thus the terms "Pro moves" came to life.

on topic: imo unless a "gosu/1337/pro/etc pub player" beats the f*ck out of a "real pro" on a regular basis(by that I mean he's a big contributor to the winning team and not just there to fill up a slot), he's a pro. otherwise, he's just an ordinary pubstomper

I disagree with you zeyall and icp. A pro-gamer is someone who makes money like the nirvana int guys but in the dota scene but theres very few who makes money beside em (MYM, tribal.int, DDT, TR but no monthly salary), a pro is someone who plays on the pro curcuit aka: Div1, farm4fame and any leagues that you are either invited or have to grind a long ladder. That's my opinion of someone who is pro.

I agree with Desrow here fully. You become pro once you get good at something. You dont have to earn for living out of it, just do it flawlesly and be recognized by others.

There's a big difference between telling someone you met "Hey I'm really pro at football" and "Hey I'm a professional football player."

Likewise, if you're trying to get a job at Blizzard or Activision, someone like LodA would be taken a lot more seriously than you or me if he put "Professional Gamer - Alienware Dota League 2009" on his resume.

You can be damn good at something or you can plain suck balls but neither of those makes you a professional. Whether you play DP, pubs, or tournaments, the competition is amateur until there's a prizepool. Money, sponsors, capitalism and companies, etc.

If you're asking who's good or not, that's another question

The term "professional" or "pro" does not necessarily mean that you need to have a certain skill level in order to play or do something. It can have different meanings depending on the context, but generally it is used to refer to someone who earns a living in a given or implied occupation. Although usually, having such an occupation means that you must be competent enough to do your job, which is why it can also refer to someone who is a skilled practitioner, or an expert.
