Drafting techniques? (8735 reads, 25 replies, 2 years ago)
Well, drafting is as important as gameplay when it comes to competitive dota..we have seen alot of really good teams lose when gotten outpicked.

So, all the pros out there, could give us some tips on drafting, what the mind set should be when doing it and how should one go about it? Should the strategy be pre-decided or it should be made at the very moment? How to counter the opponents strategy whilst putting up your own. Im sure all of us can take some help from this.

Thank you all in advance.

Normally, I'd say that the drafter 99% of the time already has a strategy made up in their heads, and will pick the first 2-3 heroes complimenting that strategy, then will try to pick 1-2 heroes that are strong picks against the enemy team.

Well im no pro but I can tell you this, pre-decided lineups are a bad idea. Ban heroes you find hard to play against or are just imbalanced, after banning phase see which core heroes are left and choose which one suits you best.

Core heroes may be Panda or ElectricPanda or medusa or riki or ursa or tauren or sniper or whatnot

These core heroes have a few unique heroes they go well with, so picking is pretty much done in pairs, you decide to go puck-ursa-storm or kunka-enigma-necro etc etc

Heroes like venge or lion or tide are standard autograb type of heroes which can work in practically any lineup.

Hope this helps a bit

A strategy I've seen(pokeridol made it back then I believe, as first to use it) - Ninjaban diffu heroes such as potm, then leave the str carries up (kunkka/sven), then ninjapick Omni/anyhardcarry and win the game :)
Another strategy I've been using lately is, if enemies haven't got medusa etc etc. Shadowpriest+Naga siren, 4 nagas + net @ lvl 2 = heavy dmg from the heal, not so effective against sven etc. But still good if you're vs. solo mid :)
to answer your question, ninja picking is the way to go :) 9/10 your enemies forgot about a hero, that will counter their lineup, atleast @ mid-mid/high cw's.

Good question...LOL! :D
I could need myself some advices, as my team has tomorrow the first match on eswc qualifiers. xD
There will be .64 played on the qualifiers.
I've thought of picking visage, spectre,cm,zeus, prophet for a global strat.
We're midskilled in about, and most of the teams out there are better than we are.
That's why we shouldn't pick/ban normal or usual heroes like they do, because they'll simply outplay us.
What I'm also thinking about is picking antipush heroes alongside spectre, morph etc. to turtle the game and win :D
Or trying a pushstrat like R digi played it some days ago. 10 min throne down. :D
I'll be happy if someone could help! :P

#12, I wouldn't try a push strat, if you're midskilled team vs. highskilled, they will most likely tear you guys down, besides, rdigi's strategy was so easy to counter with either rexxar, darkseer or pitlord. Dunno about the global strat.

Well you need to see the bans etc to decide which strat is suitable for that very game:] I think that picking a really strong lineup is better then trying to pick heroes that just counters the opponents strat. Just my thoughts.

Drafting lessons? Puppey, Maelk, Fear are all great drafters. See how they pick line ups and counter pick opposing line ups.

Better yet save up money and learn from Fear himself.

A book? Lessons? wow.. with that perception, I guess the replays shouldn't be free as well.. use your mind, if you have a strat in mind before picking, ban the counters.

E.g: Going for a push strat? ban ES/Axe/Seer etc..
Going to pick SA/Bounty, ban Slardar ..

Keep in mind, lane control, gankers, carries .. it's not that hard, it basically depends on your/team skills.

Decide what carry best fits your style.Ban heroes that really can hurt or counter him.Than you gotta decide between 2 solos or more.If u want standard 2-1-2 lanes than second two heroes(after the first carry pick)should be some aggressive heroes with stuns or at least slow.Commonly range + melee, but use your imagination and try different lanes.Try to dominate that lane(bottom sentinel or top scourge)I don't like having 2 hardcore supports in team so i choose supp/ganker heroes. After that try to predict your opponents lane on their strong side and choose counter heroes. If they got aggressive lane also choose tank with healer,if they wanna hug tower go for mass harras and spam. After time you will see what heroes really suits your style so you will have an idea of your overall pick.If they have hero that is spell dependent like warlock go for 2 solo heroes, one of them obligated to make diffusal ASAP.If they have item dependent hero than try trilane or try 1 hero woods and 2 on lane with the one woods ganking on every chance. This is just a rough and general and there are million and more things to say,but i really don't have the time for it.
You can also give us some hints about the game style and etc so we can give more specific comments.
