Google wants a good base for people to access their services, so they profit indirectly from it.
Google lives on the web. In the past, they've relied on Microsoft, Mozilla and Apple to build the browsers which users use to access Google services. Now, Google has their own browser, and this gives them a lot of security and control (also over future developments).

The browser has become an extremely important application, a gateway to many other applications (on the web). Almost like an operating system.
It's not surprising that they've implemented a very powerful JavaScript virtual machine in Chrome. This is in order to make Chrome the best and most suitable browser for modern web applications, which is Google's real business.

By releasing their own browser with specific advantages for web apps, and by open sourcing it so that other browsers can include some of the features, Google has ensured that their web apps will run flawlessly in the future.

Google Chrome uses the webkit (Open source html rendering engine). It also uses their v8 virtual machine to use turn Javascript into byte code. It is EXTREMELY fast at rendering HTML and running Javascript. It completely decimates all the other browsers. It also creates a brand new process when a tab is opened. So if one tab starts causing issues you can just kill that process and not have to worry about all your tabs closing. Of course are are some bugs but those will be ironed out pretty quickly. Its memory foot print is pretty similar to that of firefox but it doesn't seem to have the same problem firefox does with memory leaks.

I bet IE and Firefox will both take concepts from Chrome and vice versa. Eventually I see plugins for chrome just like Firefox, I believe that this browser will be the way future browsers are built.

Hmm, I tried it out, and I like it apart from a few things.

I want my bookmarks to be reachable from the left side, and always showing. That's something I always used in Firefox for easy access to the sites I visit a lot.

I also want some kind of Ad-blocker like the ones you can use with Firefox. I use both Ad-Block Plus and NoScript, and I pretty much never have to see any ads I do not want to see. I hate sites that are so full of advertising that it's a pain to see them. If there is no such thing for Google Chrome I doubt I would start using it.

The look and design looks pretty alright, but I laugh a bit at the incognito window mode they have. (I guess that's what it's called in the English version...) It is like they implemented it just so all young little horny porn surfers would download and use their browser so they can surf their daily porn without getting busted when mommy sees the list of visited sites etc. Humor!

Wow, it's so fast :)

Renders the webpages a lot faster, that's very nice.

Let's just hope that the browsers once and for all agrees on a rendering standard. That'd be very sweet. Since both this one and FF are open source, it shouldn't be too hard I suppose.

#34 I liked the Incognito window, even though I don't do porn. With a lot more of autocompletion features, "most visited sites", favourites and history etc, I wouldn't dare letting someone else use my computer for some things after a while. It's not that I do so much secret things, but my computer is still mine, right? :)

EDIT: It's REALLY</B> fast. I didn't know the speed had so much to do with the browser!

Exactly! Why would you let some fishy person you don't trust use YOUR computer? :) I think you are a bit paranoid if you think everyone would try to spy on you or w/e. ;)

Googlor people used their standard legalese crap they attach to every of their services which are somewhat inapriopriate in case of a browser.

let's say your jealous girlfriend using your remembered passwords to check your email, facebook and whatnot to see if you are not cheating on her? Even your close ones sometimes lack trust.

#39, Hehe, you got a point my friend. :) But as the stubborn idiot I am: why even be together with a bitch who wouldn't trust you? ;P

I actually looked for some different ways to stop ads in Google Chrome, and found one I like a lot. Blocks most ads (I still have to see the two ones at the top here though... >.<) very nicely. I can recommend it for people who, like me, hate ads more than most other things on the internet.

So I think I'll be trying Google Chrome outa bit more now, actually. :)
