rofl at demon team mates they just didnt get it
Thx for TB and PL I love to see unusual heroes
Hello guys. I'm a man of my word. I promised to write an interesting piece each time some skilled pro would pick a rarely played carry, and as promised, here's my "blog" game report about TerrorBlade pick by Demon. After watching this game, there are some very precise things that comes to my mind. Things that don't necessarily concern THIS game in particular (because I consider that Slickdragon already did an accurate review of it), but more GENERAL things about this kinds of picks, and the misconception peoples have : First, before even starting, I would like to thank Demon for actually picking TB, whatever was the outcome, because he's one of the very few TOP pros that actually care for the fans and pick those rarely played carries. Don't abandon, and don't stop. Weather you win or lose doesn't matter to us, as long as you bring nice, rare actions into the game. (even thou this game was not ACTUALLY a particularly nice one to watch, it was too long, but not because TB and PL were picked as some noobs pretends, but because MANY mistakes where made. On BOTH sides). So, keep going demon, don't stop. I wanted to say this, first. Secondly, I would like to go more indepth and talk about something more profound, concerning Dota recently, in general. You see, I consider myself to be one of the very few people that have actually, over the years, HUNTED (on Dota.Replays.net, here, .ru and many other sites ...), all the "pros" replay of unusual heroes. for exemple I can seriously quote you from memory almost any occurence of Barathrum being picked by pros (An exemple just for fun : Fear picked him twice on replays, a few years ago. Won once and lost once.), and I also play them very often in my own competitive games, trying to play them differently than their usual "pub style", but that's another story. What matters thou, is that I have noticed a certain PATTERN over the year, coming out of all this. And what did I notice ? Well, I found out that pros, even thou they are very competent and play MUCH BETTER than most of us do, by an order of MAGNITUDE, there's no doubt in my mind about that (just the cheer amount of play time would garantee that), and even thou some of thems are masters of the game, and I grant them that, we're forced to conclude nonetheless, when we watch and evaluate some of their choices, that they just don't have much EXPERIENCE about those heroes, in fact. Hold on a second here, I ain't saying it's something SHAMEFUL. Not at all, in fact, it's totaly LOGICAL if you come to think of it. How could it be otherwise ? To understand this, we must first conceptualize what makes the difference between a "pro" and a "pub-player". Contrary to what many ignorant people thinks, it's not the Killing score, or CS score, or even the "SKILLS" (whatever that vague terms is supposed to mean) that makes a Pro. It's KNOWLEDGE, and this knowledge needs to be supported by EXPERIENCE. Because, they are many "pub-player" that have VERY good killing and ganking skills, and can go 30/0 in pubs, 9 game out of 10. We all know them or cross the path of some of them everyday, we could even be some of them. But compared to REAL Pros (And let me tell you straight, that I don't consider every guys who is vouched in Dota Pride as a REAL pro ...), they are still noobs and will remain that way, until they ACQUIRE certain specific knowledge and vision of the game. What makes a pro ? If tomorow I would open a "Dota academy", delivering Dota versions of "Degrees", what would the "scholar cursus" be like ? What would be the mandatory classes you would have to take and complete succesfully to receive your degree ? It's a very interesting question. Their would be, for exemple, advanced Warding classes. Perfect knowledge of ALL the wards spot on the map, and the different vision they provide with sometime a space difference of just A FEW PIXELS. And of course all the counter warding that goes with it + all the rare, exotic warding spots, that you sometime see guys like Pusherstreet, Net or Dgc using. There would also be juking classes, that wouldn't let anything to CHANCE. Fog of war juking down to a scientific art with a perfect knowledge, by heart, of all the HUNDREDS juking spot and the exact fog of war projection, based on the vector you're coming from and heading to. Some juking spots don't work the same way weather you enter them from the right or from the left, for exemple. There would be some HEAVY MATHEMATICS classes concerning the EHP/MHP/GHP equations that governs the laws of damage reduction (well, the most weakly minded mathematical student would AT LEAST have to learn the results and PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS of such laws, to be able to pass :p), and of course, the most important class : The metagame's theory. its laws, and all the known (and unknown !) ramifications that creeps spawning have on the balance of the game, as the games drags on and creeps multiply. This (and many others things), is what makes a TRUE pro. Not all peoples that call themselves pros are REALLY pros. And even amongst the pros, there are differences ! Differences on the scale of knowledge they have of THOSE THINGS. Wheather they have just "notions" of them, sufficient to play and perform their duty correctly in their team (roughtly 80% of all the "Pro's team" players rosters, what I call "the basic solider"), or an advanced knowledge of those things (some 15% of today's Pros), or the deepest, inside-out knowledge of those things to perfection (about 4% of today's pro, they are the "top of the food chain") and finally ... the 1% left of the guys that, not only have mastered those things to perfection and knows everything there is to know about dota but the ones that don't rest on past knowledge but DISCOVER new things, new ways of playing and interacting with the game. Those rare guys, who do never-seen before combos, moves or metagame strategies that make you watch with your mouth open. The Explorers of new, uncharted territories. The ones that actually INVENT the new "standards" and laws, that other Dota students of the academies will be learning in the futur. There are the 1% legends (1% is a lot in fact, there is less than 0.1% of those players, only very few names comes to my mind). They are the ones that will always be remembered. Because they did much more than just "win games". KNOWLEDGE is what makes or breaks a pro. All this cannot be invented if you don't know it. There is no "shortcut", no "easy way out". It doesn't come out of thin air and it cannot be understood and intellectual digested by somebody who just started Dota yesterday or even 3 months ago, no matter what he believes. Even if he has "mad skillz", lightning reflexes and inhuman hand-eyes coordination. If your team don't know this things, and you are playing against a 5 man team of guys that KNOW them : YOU.WILL.LOSE. your game of Dota. Period. No matter WHAT your individual killing "skills" may be. But now ... some of you might be asking : "All this is very interesting and all, but why are we even talking about that ?!" . The reason why we are talking about that, is that there is ONE last parameter that determine the real, in-game performance of a player with any given hero : His intrinsic knowledge of THAT hero in particular. And how do you improve your knowledge of a particular hero ? well, as I said at the begining, it's a perfect balance of "knowledge" and "experience". Experience because there are some things you can't acquire by reading only (for exemple, the particular attack animation of the hero ...), and of course Knowledge because you have to know the indepth, advanced mechanics, Hard-fact numerical values about this hero (casting range and pointcast range, Hidden internal cooldowns, and such sneacky things certain particular heroes have ...) about all his active and passive skills. This is acquired by reading and learning, but also, by KEEPING YOUR DATA ACCURATE AND UP TO DATE. This bring us back to this game and Slickdragon's comment where he rightfully said: "This TB was Soooo 6.52e ... ". Because keeping up to date with a hero is like keeping a knife sharp. And how can you REALLY keep up to date with heroes you almost never play ? The answer is simple : YOU CANNOT. The guys may be pros, and I give them that, but they cannot pretend to be omniscient. How do you want them to play those heroes TO PERFECTION and with the most optimum builds and technics when, in reality, 99% of their games are played always with the same 20 heroes pool, depending on their role in the team. Even Demon is one of the best case, because he's clearly one of the most versatile, polyvalent and diversly skilled player in the scene today and everybody recognize him as such. I don't even speak about guys who always only play ONE ROLE, like support or gank. Each one of them have a 10 hero pool MAX (in "Integer average", because in reality, if you want to do the real statistical "Ponderated average" you'll find that, in the case of support hero, out of those 10 heroes they play, over 90% of the sheer quantitative amount of their games are played with a REAL pool of 4 heroes : Venge, CM, Lion, WL.) This is PROBLEMATIC, my friends. VERY PROBLEMATIC in the long-term, for Dota as a whole. More than you could think. Because this create a perfect vicious cycle : 1) Some heroes are considered weaker by pros, right from the beginning. Legitimately or illegitimately (This is ANOTHER, very interesting debate). 2) As they are considered weaker, they are never picked by pros. 3) As they are never picked, they are NEVER PLAYED by pros. Not even in "semi-pubs", not even "Inhouse", not even in scrims : NEVER PLAYED (or ALMOST never, don't pitnick because SOMEBODY randoms them once a year, my friends ...) 4) As they are never played, the WHOLE community of pro player's shared knowledge and global capacity to even USE those heroes correctly to their full potential diminish naturally with the time. It's sad to say, but, for SOME VERY SPECIFIC aspects and choices (as slickdragon's pointed out), even a VERY GOOD Pub Player knows specifically those heroes better than the pros, and is more up to date concerning them. This is a SAD THRUTH. 5) As their playstyle is (OBVIOUSLY AND TOTALY UNDERSTANDABLY) less sharp with those heroes because they NEVER play them, if they decide one day to pick them and play them, they have an EVEN greater chance to lose than only because of the supposed intrinsic weakness of those heroes. Because even some of the player's own choices concerning the hero are, let's say, less than optimal. So they lose, and this, once again turns into CONFIRMATION, in the mind of the global pro players community that those heroes are pure utter shit. And the vicious circle is completed. That hero earns the right to go back to the very bottom of the trashbin where he will stay for all of Eternity. Unless Icefrog remakes them all (good luck remaking 30+ heroes, in this case ...) Now I'm not saying some of those heroes aren't weak early game, or don't need some changes and buff and all this, anybody can objectively see that there are things to be done there. But on the other hand, who could, for exemple take a case, where a pro player have NEVER PLAYED MIRANA FOR YEARS, and pick her one day, plays very averagely with her (to say the least), and then the whole community would blame it on Mirana being a piece a shit hero. Do you guys imagine this happening ? No. That would be totally retarded logic. The guy's lacks of habit in playing her would be blamed. Of course. I let you draw your own conclusions concerning all those heroes, now ... I would like to conclude on a fun but very true note, concerning that Asia/Euro trash talk that was going a few weeks ago. I will not talk about "skill level" and all this abstract bullshit that people enjoy so much. To each his own. Opinions are like an anus, everybody have one. BUT ... concerning the heroes pool choices and picks, you have to give it to the asians : they are more wise and have a broader spectrum than EU/US who always picks the sames heroes like sheeps. From THIS angle, there is NO DEBATE, we have OBJECTIVE hard numerical data : their range of heroes picking is broader. And I like that. I ain't saying I like watching some of their 80 min farming games. Personnaly I believe they only did it because the 6.64 era favored it to win, and they did what they have to do to win. I concluded a long time ago that, if they wanted, they could adapt to ANOTHER, more spectator friendly kind of games, and still be very efficient, if Icefrog allow the games to go in that direction. And maybe, if we come to think about it, the reason they started picking unseen heroes, considered "unpickable" for a long time in EU/US and owned asses with them is because, to go back to the "Dota Academy" analogy, it's not that they have more "skill" (an EMPTY word, btw ...) but a wiser, broader, deeper INTELLECTUAL KNOWLEDGE of Dota. Never forget that, at the end of the day, it is Team Captains, with their picks, that shape the FACE AND THE FUTURE of this game. And obviously, their team captains saw what others could not. I say, that maybe ... there is alot more untaped knowledge and ressources that are ignored, unknown, and yet to be discovered by the global "Pro" community in the futur, about those OUTCAST HEROES. I just hope, for the sack of diversity, that it won't be the asian team captains that have to teach and surprise the EU/US team captains a second time because ... You know what they say : "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice ..." Thanks for reading, and to the Gosugamers crew : Feel free to take this text and publish it as a column if you want.
?????? plz go trow yourself through the window, thank you very much
#45 Eh, can't you read at all? -.- "by shift-queing", meaning that you use shift to cast manta directly after metamorph, which will get you ranged manta images.
#53 man plz...dont write a poema any more XD i make a pause for dinner, then read the last part...btw what make a pro, dont forget that a pro know how to run away or back to battle with low hp...cuz he has the complete sense of what he/they(enemy) can do...allways...that 1 of the most important ability for apro in dota... ...few minuts ago... wow...i get it XD!btw,if u need a teacher for ur school, call me :) btw about the game:a lot of mistake for both team... and when at minut 65 scourge use dust...i was totally----> O.O FINALLY!!! they just ignore lancer in all gangs, and everytime they take kick in the ass by him...wake up too late guys...
Nice to see terroblade in action (kind of atleast) #53 Intresting thoughts
#53 u mad? And btw demon, you should learn some manners, giving away the game when you forgot to pick up aegis, and then blaming shit on Vs, who had a really good early game
#53 First, before even starting, I would like to thank Demon for actually picking TB actualy.. why just not picking TB by Yourself and play it instead of makeing poems about some guys pubs matches oh, y, u r pro "pub replay watcher" lol
#53 rly short :a nice waste time. Someone read comment nr 53 to end?
#45 I was correct regarding the 2 points you brought up. Reaper will stun through bkb but wont damage. Also ill provide a link showcasing the creation of 3 ranged heroes with manta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apgImWyuJtY . Many good points by blah, you should create a thread in the strategic forum discussing forgotten/unknown heroes. I enjoyed the read, and a long game deserves more than just the 4 word review so i appreciate the in-depth analysis.
What manners are you talking about? Score does not matter, you can ks, do little things in the game that give you Kills, Deaths, and Assists. None of my team mates warded, and if they did it wasn't efficient enough (Especially sentrying/dusting). About the Aegis part, that was my mistake I thought I clicked on it but when the teamfight came my FPS dropped dramatically, and I couldn't really do anything in that teamfight either. Sorry, but unlike others I don't make lame excuses. I admit my mistakes, and I've made a few that game but yeah.. Nice blog btw #53
Demon, Slick : you're welcome =)
Gj Zeck!! keep going playing against pro players like Demon & Fear
Scourage would have won if they bought some gems, wasted so much money on wards/dust/bb when a $600 would have solved pl.
#61 there's an easier way than that lol but not many people know it ;o. :)
