Efeng: 'I don't think it's necessary to switch to Dota 2'

Posted by Dexter "kurtcos" F 3 months ago
PanDa at WDC: yAobAi, PanPan, Hao, Mu, Nada, Efeng

For months, PanDa has been a strong contender in the Chinese competitive scene, taking games off powerhouses such as iG and DK. In a short interview, Efeng relates his story to G-1 before his team's subsequent victory over TongFu yesterday.

PanDa has successfully advanced into the Winner's Bracket semifinals of G-1 and will face the winner of DK vs For.Love.

Give us a short introduction of yourself.
-"Hi everybody, I'm PanDa.Efeng and I currently manage the DotA division of PanDarea-Gaming."

Your team will play your first match at G-1 tonight. Tell us more about your team's roster and how these few days have went for your team.
-"Our five players currently are Hao, Mu, yAobAi, Nada and 830. Our contract with Sansheng expired, so we're in the midst of discussions with iG about transferring him over.

As for recent trainings, we have been experimenting with some new strategies."

Which teams do you normally train with? Have you played with DK yet (because you have a chance of meeting them in the next round)?
-"We've been playing WE and LGD alot recently - DK are old rivals by now, so all we can do is wait and anticipate our clash with the Galacticos!"

Your opponents TongFu claimed an easy victory prior to entering the Quarter Finals with innovative picks like Axe and Warlock. Are you confident to beating them?
-"I believe we have what it takes, and we'll sweep them away."

What is your team's understanding of the new map version (6.73c) used in this tournament? Will we see something out of the blue tomorrow, or will you guys play conservatively?
-"This will depend on how things play out tomorrow. Indeed, we have a few strategies lined up, but we will only employ them when the situation calls for it. As for whether you'll get to see us use them tomorrow, it'll depend on what my team mates and I decide to go with."

As I recall, PanDa managed to secure a third place at the previous G-1 tournament. What are your goals this time and what do you feel about the tournament so far?
-"Our goal has always been the championship. This season is actually going pretty well - I hope to see it develop into a grand offline event in the future."

At one point, your team lost Nada and Wind - looking back, do you feel that it was to your advantage? I'm sure everyone is/was aware of the effort you have put into developing the team, but did you gather any regrets along the way?
-"It was my decision to drop the two of them. PanDa's performance has been on a steady incline so I suppose I'm quite satisfied with how things turned out.

I've always felt like each player had a concrete and unique role in our team's own strategy, and that both complements each other. Hence, I'll be looking to get to a final five roster, but of course such things can be decided before a tournament.

However, I'm only their manager and not their coach, so I will offer them suggestions. The rest I will leave to their coach and captain to decide."

What do you see in the future for PanDa? When do you think our country's teams will switch over to Dota 2? Does your team frequently play Dota 2 and are they interested in participating in international Dota 2 competitions?
-"If there are competitions, we'll be sure to participate, but I do not think it's necessary for us to switch to Dota 2. DotA and Dota 2 have their differences and although Dota 2 takes it name from DotA, they are just like LoL and HoN - online multiplayer games.

About whether we'll be switching, I guess it will depend on how DotA develops and not Dota 2. But if Dota 2 turns out into an extremely big title in the future, we will consider forming a new Dota 2 team, but that does not necessarily mean our DotA players will be the ones making the switch - in my eyes, the two games are not exactly interchangeable."

Thank you and good luck with the tournament.
-"Thank you!"

Roster:
China Efeng (Manager)
China Hao
China Mu
China yAobAi
China Nada
China 830

"..in my eyes, the two games are not exactly interchangeable"
makes me wonder if DotA will prevail even after DOTA 2 is released.

it is already a fact that only CN plays dota 1 competitively and even some CN teams consider changing to dota 2 .. thus i dont really see how it would be worth for them to keep playing dota 1 (especially if IceFrog give up updating dota 1 completely after dota 2 release)

PS claiming that dota 2 is more similar to hon/lol than to dota 1 shows how ignorant and conservative this guy is

#4 DeeJay 3 months ago
Well the thing is DOTA needs permanent changes and balances. If Valve decides to "force" Icefrog to not develop DOTA 1 anymore than it will kind of die.

If Icefrog will continue to update DOTA 1, make new heroes, balance etc. than DOTA 1 will last for a long time even after DOTA 2 is released.

We will see.

Right now the Dota 2 hero pool isn't quite big enough for my liking, however once all the heroes have been implemented I would be glad to see CN teams moving to Dota 2.

Oh well, China's loss. I hope no CN teams are invited to the International purely on Dota 1 reputation.

Comparing DOTA2 to HoN/LoL.. nice manager you got there Panda.

But all of the world and now even chinese teams are switching, DotA will be dead competitively in max a year.

#8 I also think some chinese teams should not be invited, there re far more deserving NA/Au teams. After all it's not only the 1mil, the prizes for 2,3,4,5,6 you still won't see in a DotA tournament.

I'm a Chinese, but do not understand why many Chinese tend to be so arrogant in their speech.

He's like saying "Hey wait, Dota2 isn't that hot, and even if it turns out to be a hit, don't assume we'll jump into action."

Happily sitting in the comfort zone?

Months later, when his team switches to Dota2, he would be saying the exact opposite."OH DOTA 2 HAS SO MUCH SUPPORT FROM THE DEVELOPER AND FANS, WE'LL GRANT THE FANS' WISH AND SWITCH, AND WE WILL DEFINITELY BE #1"
#14 9sky 3 months ago
Frankly, China has done almost nothing to support DotA at all outside of China. I'm tired of hearing their opinions, especially from some random manager.

Nicely said.

I disagree with most of the thing he says.

Why is it nicely said by the way? What does it means? Is Dota 2 also like CS or WoW ? "Online multiplayer games" that means nothing.

#34 jetzero 3 months ago
LOL. it's so funny. Too many DotA 2 boys crying because Efeng says they don't like DotA 2. And he just compare DotA 2 from LoL and HoN because of ONLINE MULTIPLAYER GAMES. You can't simply play it unlike DotA.

#14 +1

If chinese do not want to switch to dota 2, they will be the only people who will suffer, and nobody in fact will really care about this. No chinese in tournaments, i bet we can live with that. Even better, no chinese => more money for EU and american teams :). In the end they will decide to switch to dota 2 themselves and ask to be invited to tournaments. Such statements like "dota 2 is no more than LoL and HoN - just online multiplayer game" are simply unserious. Lets see if this guy will think so in 1 year time, especially if icefrog halts or slows a lot dota 1 updates. After all, China really did not make much for dota 1 outside the country, so why should they be invited to TI???

So many Dota 2 fanboys. Respect what he said. He might change his opinion in the future but for now it is probably the most applicable situation for his team. And yes he is considering having a Dota 2 team (albeit not being ported from the current Dota team).

DotA will live on forever..
It's just that,Chinese teams will compete with each other or some SEA teams forever..That would be so boring...

I dont get that "Dota 2 takes it name from DotA, they are just like LoL and HoN - online multiplayer games" part?
Dota1 was offline multyplayer?
If some Chinese wont switch leave them be.
Dota2 will be like SC2,most of ppl will make the switch while hardcore best of best will stay active until they realize that their game is duying out.
Only reason most of korean BW pros (A rank pros) didnt switch to SC2 is that there is still demand for BW in Korean and Korea only.
Same will happen with China.

#35 tell me which country make much for dota 1 outside their country?
CN tean dont switch to dota2 beacause it's beta still and few chinese can get the key.So it will be fool for them to give up a game millions are playing and switch to dota2.
I also wander why all the eu teams switch to dota2 without giving any thought to so many fanboys still can only play dota?
3
#42 cSzY 3 months ago
And Y U flame him for what he said? It is only reasonable for them to focus on dota because of the frequency of dota 1 tournaments in China. That's good money and throwing that away for what appears to be a majority of online dota 2 tourneys where they lag to death is not smart at all. So making the switch for just The International where they might not win becomes a dumb choice.
Thus what he said is perfectly right, see how dota develops in CHINA and if it declines, switch is gonna happen. But is there a decline? not yet. Dunno whats there to flame about.

Dota2 people thinks too highly of themselves I must say. I like the game but didn't expect so many people to hop on the Dota2 fleet and claim to be the forerunners when most people don't have a beta key. lol
3
#45 luc14n0 3 months ago
This was very much expected. Why would the CN scene just port to dota 2 when there's no LAN feature and 70% of the heroes ? It's freaking beta, i simply can't understand how there are so many tourneys over a beta, it's hilarious really.
When valve/icefrog turns their head to china, the switch will be made, just don't expect them to play a beta game like it is a full game.

#46 handa 3 months ago
Unlike SC1 and SC2, Dota 2 will eventually replaces Dota 1. There are SO MANY neat stuffs Dota 2 has that Dota 1 lacks. And unlike SC2, Dota 2 has LAN.

#47 dD.NL 3 months ago
Most people crying about other people complaining on the article can't read english either it seems, I can't find the part where he didn't like dota 2, he only said something about not switching aka playing both if needed. That said people who think there's a 'big difference' between dota 1 and 2 probably haven't received their beta keys yet.
2
#48 irie123 3 months ago
I agree. Why do they put so much money on a game thats on beta. I mean, "ITS BETA FFS, ITS NOT A COMPLETE GAME". Half of the hero pool isnt even there yet.
And Im guessing a lot of bugs are still present.

When Dota 2 becomes fully released and NOT ON BETA. Then make the switch.

PS. Im no Dota 2 hater, I have the key since 1 month after TI. But its a lot fun to watch a complete game, than a "Dota"game with half the content.

#49 Inertiater 3 months ago
They should start playing DotA2

I guess they would like to play it LAN more than internet wise and it isn't in yet.
