Riot Games vs Valve Software

Not so long after Valve Software has filed a trademark for DotA, Riot Games has made a response.Riot Games is the game production company that has created League of Legends, a game that resembles DotA. Valve Software, too, is developing another DotA game that many believe would be the most successful successor to the original DotA as Icefrog, the current DotA mapmaker is involved in the Valve's DotA project.
Valve has recently filed a trademark for "DotA". Three days after, on August 9th, Riot has counter-filed a trademark for "Defense of the Ancients", the unabbreviated name of DotA. According to Riot Games' Steve "Pendragon" Mescon, Riot has "filed for the 'Defense of the Ancients' trademark to protect the work that dozens of authors have done to create the game and on behalf of the millions of DotA players all over the world". Furthermore, Pendragon has stated in an interview with PC Gamers that DotA belongs to the original creators, Guinsoo and Eul, without mentioning Icefrog.
Riot Games' ultimate wish is to let DotA or Defense of the Ancients be contributed to the community. However, how would they explain their irony in filing a trademark for Defense of the Ancients themselves? Furthermore, who exactly has the right to decide the ownership of DotA? Who has more power over it? Hopefully, more of these questions may be answered in the future.

| Since the original creators didn't trademark it and discontinued developing and it was picked up by IceFrog and since he is working with Valve and they had the right idea of trademarking, they should get it. Edit: They can trademark DotA or Defense of the Ancients but most will still support IceFrogs project. They made the game, yes. But IceFrog made the game what it is now and that's what is important to us gamers. |

| ice frog knows perfectly the 'gameplay' of dota. all these copies like hon,lol etc are a lot different style and feeling than the original dota. so, valve+icefrog>riot. |

| All respect to League of Legends as a standalone game in the MOBA genre. All respect to Riotgames for making their OWN game. But trying to claim Defence of the Ancients as a trademark is just a dickmove, they don't have to do. Honestly, it's mainly HoN that should be afraid of DotA 2 stealing their player base. |

If icefrog along with valve can make better game than riot, they will do it and we will play it no matter how its gonna be named. This brand is not a automobile market or sth like that. Online gamers chooses best fun for them, not fun which is to be known as best. On the other hand riot's policy is ugly.  |

| LOL is a disgrace to the DotA community and has done nothing but split the community. I really, really hope, for the sake of competitive DotA, that if Valve's project goes well, that it will dominate the competition, and all the sad DotA clones will disappear... DotA is still better than both HON and LOL by such a huge margin... |

| What really would be the problem for valve/icefrog is to prove that this trademark "DotA" belongs to them and not riot games. Icefrog has no real ownership over the title. Dont really see how, in a legal point of view, how either of them can win it. If Riot Games didnt file a trademark request the request from valve would have been undisputed and therefore going to valve. Even if Icefrog and valve ends up losing this fight over "DotA" they can just name it something else Edit: read the "interview"... pendragon said 1 thing over something like 6 questions. Worthless |

| Did you guys even see this LoL game? Most ridiculous baby "2D" game I've ever seen. To those who play LoL, just play Tetris or Mario on old Gameboy.. They're far more exciting and less nub'ish. Point is, fu Pentdragon. Leave us alone =) |

| Guinsoo: "Neither Pendragon, Riot Games nor I have any desire to dictate the future of DotA." So what's their buisness in all this? They also mention that DotA is something that should remain so called community-owned, and the first thought that popped up in my head was; and how is this going to change when "DotA 2" comes out? Anyone got any ideas? :) Im excited that DotA gets to be a stand-alone game and not some mod in a soon-to-be 10 year old game. And for that matter, Im glad that someone finally can make some serious money out of it all. I dont know with you guys, but Im not playing DotA bcoz its free. I can play any game for free through m8s, cracks and trials. But the games I stick too are those which I think is great, in this case: DotA. tyty Icefrog xoxoxo |
