DotA history: MYM vs Virtus.Pro

Posted by Terrence "MrBlue" Wong 1 year ago
Relive one of the most epic matches in DotA history with some nice commentary to boot. This game is between the old school MYM vs the Russian powerhouse Virtus.Pro.

This is probably the only match I have ever rewatched!

DotA's golden age, a time when we had real teams, and not only random mixes of players.

That's "DotA's golden age"? Seriously, no role distribution in team, Tinker placing wards and no items and some very bad mistakes.

Today's DotA is 3 times better. And the game has become harder! (thinking of dagger disable, etc.)

#40 Maybe, but it certainly isn't more fun to watch than in those days! To me big part of competitive DotA died when the version was changed to 6.50+ and when VP was disbanded. All of games we see today, and all those RR games we see today, aren't even close to being fun to watch as the were in that era...

It is just sad that today people look at DotA pros, and the better they farm, the better they are in term of skill, at least that is what most people say... Unlike that, you can't see anymore some of the pro moves that Slahser/Mania/Vigoss/Admir/Smile did...
I wait for day when DotA will be back to its 6.43-6.48 glory, no matter if we need the whole new game(Dota2) for it to take that effect! ;)

You know a game is dying when the hottest news is a many-years-old VOD. It's like BW-nerds watching old Boxer vs Yellow replays.

There's a point of truth to that. For incredible entertainment and the sheer 'fun to watch' quality, these VP vs MYM era games are unmatched. At least in my experience, too.

But since then (.48b and before), DotA has indeed gotten a lot more advanced as a game. There is much more complexity in the different strategies, the way supporting and teamplay are, the heroes are balanced more carefully, and so forth. Since then, DotA has become a lot more serious as a competitive game and more professional.

Seems like a fair and worthy tradeoff. We may yet see some wildly aggressive, creative, and ganking play like that, but it will take a lot more effort and work for a team to be able to sustain it nowadays, given that if ganking is countered it's usually an easy GG.

#46 I agree, still every DotA version is different, with different heroes being used, different styles of play etc. Even with that trade off that you are talking about, I agree, DotA is a lot more complex now, but every version there is like 20 heroes being used(FOTM heroes), always the same way, and the gank style is missing. I can just hope, but we will see.

I can say for sure that I don't enjoy DotA as much as I did in 6.43-6.48 era, even if I am 10 times better player today.
