Spread love, not hate
Posted by Vincent "em0_llama" Nunes 2 years ago
Well known DotA veteran and icon, Drayich, recently blogged about the level of hate within the community and the reasoning behind it.
The DotA community is growing day by day, going from strength to strength but something that has hung over the head of the community and players as a whole is the level of hate or flaming which occurs in and around games. This is something that has obviously been floating around in Papa Dray's head for a while. Something that Drayich deals with are the comments made on sites such as GosuGamers.net following a replay or news article. According to him, 60% of the comments are negative and are generally made to make people feel bad; for what other reason would they be made?
Dray also talks about the vibe and personalities floating around DotA Pride and DotA Pride 2, especially how many players who consider themselves as "pros" will run down other players with derogatory comments such as "stupid noob". Do they expect these players to magically play better when insulted?
Drayich makes a specific reference to Kuroky's statement following their loss to TheSHIT!, where they played with a techies strat. He complimented the German star on his maturity and manners in accepting defeat and not resorting to excuses such as, "we picked for fun".
Below is a short extract from Drayich's blog:
"So, I'm challenging you all. Professional players, noobs, midskilled, HoN players, Feeders, Gangers, call yourself whatever you want to, but take some time to think before you comment on other players. Ask yourself, What is my intension? Is my intension really to behave badly? Do I want to feel like I'm a better person by saying something which isn't nice? Do I want the victim to feel offended?
If thats the case - I hope someone hugs you soon."
Flaming is something which GosuGamers tries very hard to interdict, but not everyone is as mature as expected. The DotA scene is riding the crest of the wave at the moment, but in order to achieve excellence, all the hate needs to end.

make love, not make war plz :) u can love DotA, why u can't love others?
really really agree papa dray btw, u look like wrestler with that pic. =]
:DD You ever play football? I watched this game last night, 1 defender fell asleep, opponents scored. Goalkeeper starts yelling at him in outburst of rage :D What was he supposed to do, hugg him? Tell him that everything is gonna be fine? You are mistaken if you think things arent even worse irl. Ppl are beating eachother on streets ffs. And i wasnt really comparing dota to professional football. You say yelling cant be heard from audience, but we have forums to make them heard. Which brings me to my first post. Ignore, punish, ban. Internet at least has ways to enforce the law ez, unlike real life. If ppl wanna make this a better place, ignore rude posts that offend u and let admins use their ban hammer which should be used more often i think. Just dont push it into DL ways pls. And go donate some blood :) #48 I didnt say internet is based on those, i said they are part of it.
yo dawg, stop being a whiney bitch, lmao.
Yeah, one more, happy birthday to your daughter :D
-hhn + /squelch >>> insult posts in dota
as much as I admire Drayich writing this amazing article and as much as I agree with the opinion he has about the current state of DotA community I don't think that the article will help too much. of course, and it will make some people think 'do I really want to flame anyone if he's worst than me? where my flame will lead me and him?' that is already an achievment that Drayich managed to reach. but I don't think this will solve the problem, the community is really young and has yet to grow, the arrogant kids who think they are better than everyone do not even care about blogs like this, they just stick to their own which is, thinking about themselves. I'm 120% with Drayich's idea so don't get me wrong. I just do not believe this will solve the problem. but I do believe that time will solve most of this problem, the scene will grow more and more as well as maturity will grow along with it, and articles like that just fastens the process, it doesn't really solve the problem. though I'm happy to see that at least anyone cares about the scene, Drayich, honeslty, I admire how much you care for the scene so much I can't describe it. Drayich <3
Let's face it quite a large percentage of dota community are kids and I'm not judging age but mentality, the internet and the indentity hiding adds alot to that. Imo it's up to ppl who find themselfs mature enough to ignore the comments which dray spoke of and reply to those that give constructive criticism even though they are rare
60% of the comments are negative and are generally made to make people feel bad; for what other reason would they be made? agree with drayich |
#53. Dude you missed the whole point of this thread by Dray. You said in an earlier post that its alright for people to say "holy fuck that windrunner sucked" since its just his opinion. The whole point of Papa is: Its alright for you to have that opinion. But do you have to say it outloud? How does that statement help anyone in any way. Feel like you wanna and have the opinions you want, but think about it before you choose to share it. Ask yourself it it helps anything :=)
#28 "Completely agree, some playful needling/good natured trashtalking is imo good for the game" Elaborate please. What good does trashtalking bring? I know it is all relative, but you have to be extremely careful not to sound condescending. Most pubs/IHs/FWs/allstars games should be about having a good time and a laugh, only! There's nothing more pathetic than those 16-21 year olds throwing around "kid" etc. to people who are either way more mature than them or in fact older. The ignorance is tragi-comic. I used to ignore it and laugh. Then I started banning people for flaming and now I have almost 2k flame bans (they truely are everywhere). Then ghost implemented the !mute, and thank god for that. It hurts the teamplay, true, but at least the rest can still play on uneffected and have fun :)
nice picture !
#60 Yeah, what you just explained is how I understood it myself and Im tired of expressing myself. In short, i got it ok? And you got a wrong person btw
I'm afraid this isn't a easy prob. to change. :( However, i agree 100%
Obviously I completely agree with Dray. The problem with the community though is that it's full of immature teenagers. And do pay attention to the word immature. Lots of teenagers are sofisticated and nice, but even more are immature persons to who struggle to be seen. And this is a huge problem on the internet as a whole. There is a conflict between people at different stages in life.
Bravo Papa, you got guts to say such things.
"but take some time to think before you comment on other players" Words to live by guys.
Man all the flaming on bnet is sooo annoying. people dont just get better when you rage at them. thats why I try to help with item and skill builds and tell them to add me to friends if they have any questions. gotta spread the love of DoTA to everyone!!! PLUR all the way.
dray when we go out for drinks with ur wife ? ^^
MAKE LOVE AND WARCRAFT
mb the pessimists are right when they say "this wont change anything". but everything starts small and can grow. the esportscene can only grow stronger if theres real sportsmanship included!

No matter what happens there will always be haters. I just hope that the level of haters decreases. Good for Dray. He has always been a player I looked up to ever since I started following competitive DotA during the mouz days. This just makes me respect him even more. Much respect.
All that HATE (between continents) as you mentioned started when your professional acted arrogantly and stated that asians were no match. Thats FACT 1. And since you were starting an honest discussion, I believe admitting this fact would be one of the first steps in reducing that HATE, although the fault does not necessarily stem from you, or your actions. FACT 2, Europe's 'professionals' then started propagating lies, flames, taunts towards the other (Misery), challenged players and then backed off (Maelk), and generally acting like retards on the net - Loda etc. These are the very professionals that are SUPPOSED to act in a respectable manner, because the euro fanboys look up to them. Act like an as*s, and you will have hordes of other delusioned fanboys believing that whatever they say, is indeed true. FACT 4, EURO PRO players who were HONEST, who came clean and admitted that indeed ASIA was miles apart in terms of sheer skill, knowledge, strategy (Kuroky, Puppey - who actually flamed fellow 'pro' Euro players for their despicable online acts), but instead of acknowledging this, and being humble, they instead FLAMED him (Misery), stating that its just pure BS, and then of course duly got beaten so soundly in a LAN tournament. FACT 5, YET again the Euro community hid behind multiple excuses - there were many Asian teams, they weren't prepared etc. So you see, its nor exactly the community in general who have no respect, it is the Euro community, and the gg.net mods, who instead of helping to spread the truth (and subsequently LOVE), locks and denies posts/threads. You dont see Asian flamers here on gg.net anymore. The HATE (and no doubt some would say stupidity) has now moved on to euro vs euro. Its hilarious seeing some of the comments and flames between the europeans that we dont even need to be here - we can just let you guys self destruct. But of course we don't want that, where would the challenge come from then? So you want LOVE? PEACE? Want the SCENE to progress and develop? SIMPLE - Come out with a comprehensive statement stating the undoubted FACTS about Asia's superiority - and enough with all the excuses, and to accept the truth. Only by being honest, and accepting that fact, can you even START to progress. Peace.
#87 Still provoking flames. Haven't you learned anything from what Dray said? Results speak for themselves. Asians won the LAN tournies. But if you want guys like Misery to admit that Asia > Euro, don't hold your breath. Just stop that flames. BTW the "Peace" you put in the end of your statement is completely retarded. Because you didn't mean it at all and it completely contradicts everything you said including your name.
Respect Papa Dray, and nice pic
Immediately after taking this picture...Dray exploded out of his shirt!
you know why this happens ? cause the majority of dota players are still teenagers ... and 90% of the teenagers are stupid - i know i was back then ... the only way to stop the flaming and cursing is to make a rule like : don't play dota if you're under 19-20 years ... problem solved
I hope misery reads this..
#88 Is so right. I often said you have some very true points (#87), but the way you express them, provokes so much useless flames. Your nick amplifies that.
i hate you all, you nerdish nolifers and lifewasters, YOU LAZY APES! QUIT DOTA NOW. Get a future.
+1 for drayich.. flamers are the real "stupid noobs or what they use to flame" cuz they just talk and talk as if they are known in competitive dota.. get a life trolls/flamers
agreed.........btw u r so muscular..........:D
IceFrog rename Sven to Dray.
that was awsome mr drayich...good job..i hope all those people commenting not cool well wake up...:D
About Sven, both me and my son have the name Sven as one of our firstnames since my dads name was Sven. 87, this blog/article is not the competetive hate which i think is okey. asia saying asia dominates, europe saying europe dominates and so forth. i think thats pretty cozy, and its like it should be. Teams stating their better then the other team is not what i count as bad manners. But it was an interesting way of getting this subject to the subject you have on your mind, a suggestion would be that you write something about this asia vs europe if that is what you wanna discuss, but this thread is not about it =)
I hate you all, this is bullshit!
