Spread love, not hate

Posted by Vincent "em0_llama" Nunes 6 months ago
Well known DotA veteran and icon, Drayich, recently blogged about the level of hate within the community and the reasoning behind it.

The DotA community is growing day by day, going from strength to strength but something that has hung over the head of the community and players as a whole is the level of hate or flaming which occurs in and around games. This is something that has obviously been floating around in Papa Dray's head for a while.

Something that Drayich deals with are the comments made on sites such as GosuGamers.net following a replay or news article. According to him, 60% of the comments are negative and are generally made to make people feel bad; for what other reason would they be made?

Dray also talks about the vibe and personalities floating around DotA Pride and DotA Pride 2, especially how many players who consider themselves as "pros" will run down other players with derogatory comments such as "stupid noob". Do they expect these players to magically play better when insulted?

Drayich makes a specific reference to Kuroky's statement following their loss to TheSHIT!, where they played with a techies strat. He complimented the German star on his maturity and manners in accepting defeat and not resorting to excuses such as, "we picked for fun".

Below is a short extract from Drayich's blog:

"So, I'm challenging you all. Professional players, noobs, midskilled, HoN players, Feeders, Gangers, call yourself whatever you want to, but take some time to think before you comment on other players. Ask yourself, What is my intension? Is my intension really to behave badly? Do I want to feel like I'm a better person by saying something which isn't nice? Do I want the victim to feel offended?
If thats the case - I hope someone hugs you soon."

Flaming is something which GosuGamers tries very hard to interdict, but not everyone is as mature as expected. The DotA scene is riding the crest of the wave at the moment, but in order to achieve excellence, all the hate needs to end.

Great blog from dray, however I feel sometimes dota pros seem oblivious to the fact that there will always be retards on the internet.

Agreed with Papa Dray.. Showing some maturity in a community that desperatly lacks some is a must, especially since it's getting worse and worse with an increasing ammount of trolls/haters. Can't see a game without one "AHAHAHHAHAHA SO NOOB" after one kill, or some prick blaming everyone else for a collective, and quite often his very own fail.
Act like grown ups and stop raging over some game, play with a good and friendly spirit, and things will go way smoother than if you keep on blaming every of your teammates.

"Fucking noob" is nothing new, and for what reason? To make the "noob" play better? Definently not, its yet again only to harm, to be offensive towards others. No other reason is good enough."
Word !

#7 I think they're conscious of that; but it's still tiresome on the long run, especially at times when the team'd really need some fan support. Sadly, people tend to be twofaced and spit on their previous "favorite" team when that happens.
On another note, dota pros are sometimes acting reaaaally childishly. Wish more of them were like KuroKy ( young, and still more mature than two thirds of them ) or Drayich.

Anyway, spread the luuuvvv :D

i always knew dray was a big part, and a good one, of the dota community... but during his comeback i was one of those who thought that he only got attention in the community cause he was an old headliner... but after playing vs him and also reading his blog i realised how much he does for the community, and what a rolemodel he is.

i wish him the best of luck and that others will follow his example, hail papa dray.

It's a pretty good message from Dray.

I'd add that the goal should not be trying to make a "kumbaya" atmosphere (you're supposed to act like you love everyone all the time) or naively try to get everyone to fit into some ideal vision. Rather, it's a more interesting and worthwhile forum to read (and play in games as well) that is dealing with issues, content, the game itself, rather than always existing on the lowest internet level of emo, super-angry, mindless stuff, which gives the impression of venting adolescent angst.

well some fun part of dota is the skill to flame :D But in Competetive dota like dp1 and dp2 there must not be flamers and "self called pros".I dont remember any decent team from new players being formed lately.Only the old "stars.Nobody gives any chances to the new dota players to shine witch is very bad.Sup you dray

LOL? gosugamers trying to eradicate flaming? wow, this must be the biggest joke of the day. LOL. u mean by selective banning? or mayb by banning any anti-euro comments but allowing anti-asian comments to be posted freely is considered "interdicting" by gosugamer's standards. a big WOW and GOOD JOB.

my advise to gosugamer crews: if u r so interested in protecting ur "european site" status, please, stop posting any replays featuring asian teams as well as any news regarding the asian dota scene. don't make a fool out of urselves, though its not as though u aren't already one LOL.

Completely agree, some playful needling/good natured trashtalking is imo good for the game. The comments at sites such at this one is where the real problem lies. But since most of the people who post these comments are immature teenagers safely tucked behind their computer screens then it's pretty difficult to weed out the flamers.

In any case I fully agree with Dray on this issue and sincerely hope that the general community will make an effort to change it's attitude. A more pleasant atmosphere at sites such as this would be very nice

I hope everybody takes this seriously. But I doubt it, those who flame are mostly people who are full of themselves. They have personality problems not just mere attitude problem I guess...Don't use forums as your cushions because your frustrated in real life!

Calling professional Dota players noobs?! What's up with that! It only shows they are not thinking at all. They are merely fetching attention! What a odd way though...This is one of the reasons why newcomers are reluctant to keep on playing Dota, they are flamed a lot! Especially here in my homeland.

Man wtf?? Wherever I turn my head i see this guy talking about flame hate and other shit. HATE?? Do you guys know what hatred is? It means wanting and wishing for all the worst to the person u hate. If somebody ruins my day and i get pissed at him and tell him off, do I hate him? Hell, you can ruin MY ENTIRE LIFE I and still wouldnt be able to feel that kind of feeling. Flame, trolling, provocations, its called INTERNET and its part of life! You can fight it many ways, more radical or not but in the end, you gonna have to close your eyes, face it and deal with it. Talking about it constantly wont solve it. Punishing the worst and ignoring is more of a way. Peace

#32 look what happened to #35. Hes gonna call me out soon and he thinks i choose this picture. UPPERCUTTED

#36 Actually INTERNET is sucha big part of a normal life right now that those argument arent strong enough anymore. And even if im not always seriously deeply offended when people say things its still a matter of choosing your words more wisely. Getting people to feel better, and having respect towards the words that you use.

#38 Hell people meet their future wifes on internet i heard. So i'd say its "not just internet" anymore, and i think thats one of my points. "That windrunner sucked" is a perfect example of a comment.
Who is that comment made for? Its a completely senseless comment, anyone can see that the windrunner that failed failed. So the meaning of the statement is useless, unless your point was to be offensive. Then it worked!

Drayich I respect what you are trying to do.
But since you are saying that internet is a big part of normal life, put it in another perspective. Say you have a football game, random guy joins your team, plays bad and costs you a game. You gotta have a PERFECT day to offer this guy a solace, which you often dont have. And even if you do, another guy will get mad at him and make him miserable. And then some random from audience (gosugamers.net comentor )will yell at him in rage that he is nobody and w/e else. Its the same thing wouldnt you say? So how do you make things right? You CAN'T!
Those who play bad are mostly aware of it. If they arent, that just makes them ignorant and i have no respect for them. What they want is to find comfort after they have failed in the guys like you are. Saying that they played bad at this point and being silent about it, is one and the same thing. What you want is a perfect world with ppl full of understanding to each other. GL with that ;)

43, the one screaming from the audience wont be heard in a fotballgame.

and its not a random guy joining a team.
its randoms playing versus randoms.

you really think if we gather up 10 people playing football people would behave as they do online? haha, im pretty sure they wont. mostly because they would have respect for the words that they are using. right now internet seems to be the place where people expect to be completely anonymous. its not like that anymore, its a place where we can expect to meet other human beeings, thats why there are no real arguments for NOT BEHAVING ATLEAST DECENT. And you can never convince me there are arguments like that.
I dont care if its kids, grownups, halfgrownups, semi-kids. Having a decent respect towards eachother makes EVERYTHING much more interesting.

Showing respect towards others also is showing respect towards yourself.
If you think you are "Only on internet" "Only playing a game" then you already are at the wrong place. I thought it was a decision people took to get online and play a computer game - and if they have any respect for their hobby they cant disagree when i say; Lets have fun!

And about perfect world. Ofcourse you aim for the stars when you set your limits, perhaps its impossible to get a perfect scene, but its not impossible to get a decent one.
Having goals and aim is something thats so needed in situations like this one, and in many other situations. You have to belive its possible if you gonna reach anywhere with anything. So. Instead of giving me arguments for why there never can be a perfect mannered scene, join in and be a part OF the mannered scene, and we take it from there

#45 it was just an example of where the "words with bad intensions" are found.
If i would listen to what ever fanboy said about me i would have quit DotA long time ago, and i think most of the players would ;)

Its Carma Dry its all Karma.
"-He who lives by the sword, he dies by the sword"
Simple as that.
@36
If Internet was what u say than the world would not exist.

Mr. Kim is a perfect example of how should we behave.
I know i did some raging over the past especially toward Danes but im proud to admit i was wrong and stubborn. I even asked forgiveness from the players. And it was via internet. Yea we dont even know each other but that does not change a lot.
What Dry want to say is what u give is what u get.
So start giving some positive vibes and it will all be better.

Dray, my English is bad too, but i hope i'll understand me :D

I cant imagine how can these players change, because who is saying 'fuckin noob' can understand u very well. My point of view this thing only can be true, in a perfect world, but the world isn't too perfect :( unfortunetly.

When u came back to dota, my first thought was WTF, if i can say this, u are too old to this game and to these people. I knew u are a great person and i couldn't believe u'll be happy in this scene, because only few people is really normal in this 'internet chaos'. On internet everyone can said anything because he don't need give his face to this.
This thing was only my first thought. So i'm glad, because u are here, with a normal opinion and normal thinking

I'm really happy that u are write this thing to the whole community and i hope it will change the scene. But i think it is only a whiff of hope.
I'm glad because i can see i'm NOT alone with this opinion.
