DotA gets recognition by high profile Counter Strike LAN organizers!

Posted by Maaz "maaz139" Ahmad 2 years ago
Hazard, a well known Counter Strike tournament organizers have decided to include DotA in this years LAN event. With a prize pool of 2.500 Euros, this is definitely an event to look forward to.

This March 4 - 7, Sweden will witness the first ever Hazard Dota tournament. The 4 day event is set to take place just outside Stockholm, and with the large prize-pool it is expected to attract the best of Sweden and Europe.

The tournament will be BYOC (bring your own computer) and will be played as double elimination, 5vs5. There are currently 12 spots for DotA teams, but if more teams show interest Hazard will accommodate more spots for DotA teams.

The performance of this event will decide the future of DotA as part of the Hazard LANs. This is the first major development in the European DotA scene for a prolonged period of time.

Prize distribution:

1. 17.500 SEK (~€1.721, ~$2,475)
2. 5.000 SEK (~€491, ~$707)
3. 2.500 SEK (~€245,~$353)

@blah278
Yes, you're right there's probably a reason why scandinavian people are the ones supporting it, while outsiders aren't. Yes, it's not "fair" towards people that can't really come to due traveling expenses or because they'd have to bring their computer. HOWEVER, I don't know why it's such a big deal. So what if it's a LAN for swedish/scandinavians mainly? No one's forced to come. Yes, they're missing out but you can't have everything go your way =/ Another time the tournament will be somewhere else and then the scandinavians won't come and then big team X will bulldozer the unknown teams on that LAN. So, the best team of that region wins, and the problem is...?

What you're pointing out may be correct, you make it sound like a problem though, while it isn't.

I think it is good for the DotA scene that they host tournaments like this one. But it makes me sad to see people complain about it.

And btw, Thumbs up Sweden!

#47 and #54 mind your language please. In response to blah278's comments, It sounds to me like its an event intended to attract local teams. If you keep that in mind then the prize money is hefty, even taking into account the BYOC condition. In any case, I don't think anyone should respond to blah278's comments on this particular thread. I thing he is/was being a troll.

Its really sad to see people whining about someone hosting a LAN and a great tourment with nice prizes. What is there to complain about, really?

From my end, it just stinks jealousy because there are actually people devoted in sweden, to host LAN events like this.

Even though some of it is already mentioned, Ill give you some brief background information on Hazard:

First off, its a local LAN event, and has been so for many many years (Please read the word local 5 times to yourself). Hazard has for me, both as an organizer and an antendee, always been about the people in first hand, the tournaments have just been there to make it a little more interesting. Its not until the later years that the focus has shifted more to tournaments, and this is the first time DotA is getting a lot of attention. Almost every Hazard a couple of years back have had a DotA tournament, but with a small prize pool.

Anyway, Im starting to get offtopic. The reason I actually singed up and made this post is not that I think it will make a difference, but that it really saddens me when people complain about not getting something for free when a few brave souls are doing a lot of WORK FOR FREE so that everyone can get together and have some fun.

You guys fail to see that this is not a competetive LAN intended only for tournaments. It's like Dreamhack, it happens to have tournaments with nice prizemoney, and if you're gonna get stuckup about the admins not feeling like organizing shit with computers and stuff then so be it.

@Matrim

To rent 5 pc's for dh you were supposed to pay 900euro per computer as insurance that you wont steal it (you would ofc get the money back after you return pc's but still 4500euro???), + 2300euro for 3 days, so i dont get where exactly did you find the 30$ rents :)

+ the prizes for this event are almost like only the 1st place on dreamhack and even on dh prizes were to low

Nice tournament, didn't even know of this hazard lan even though i'm swedish. Really great that they are picking up dota :D

@baja I was talking to IO admins and they said it were about that cost last time they had cooperation with dh =). Reason I know this is because DMZ wanted to rent computers aswell, but suddenly they didn't want too anymore

This tournament can do really good to the future DOTA scene so, yes, i support them. Remember that if it is a sucess maybe next time will be bigger and better (maybe without BYOC and maybe with a bigger prizemoney)...so i really don´t get all the complaining.
People should be happy to notice that DOTA is getting recognition.
GJ Hazard. Hope you´ll get bigger and ask DOTA pro teams what they like to improved in the next tournament, so that you have more players, better players, more exciting matches, and so that DOTA continues to grow in recognition.

guys there really is no reason to complain about BYOC unless its hurting your chances of attending.

As for the "big sponsored teams", i doubt BYOC will stop them from attending if they want to.

Sure BYOC is a pain in the ass (or at least we feel so) but its their tournament and their rules. Plus i think swedes just like doing extra work ....take a look at IKEA

@64 This is the first time ever they are including Dota, just be positive and support the event. Who knows in a few years it becomes an "SMM"? We cry all the time for development and then when it comes complain...

I BRING MAH COMPUTER AND PWN YA ALL?
#72 blah278 2 years ago
Let me see ...

_Gone to the beach and back (In January ...) ? Check.

_90% of answers coming from swedes, confirming what i have always said ? Check.

_The Dota's swedish mafia is gonna share the Prize money while pubstomping noobs, protected against ANY REAL COMPETITION whatsoever, by that BYOC bullshit ? Check.

I love being right everytime ...

And by the way, it's really sad and painful that i have to actually EXPLAIN this (Maybe it just prove the average IQ of some people is really low), but anyway ... let's clarify something for the more intellectually challenged amongs us, so that no "Quid Pro Quo" remains :

I have only RESPECT for people ORGANIZING this LAN. Or organizing anything for that matter. It beats sitting on your ass, anytime. They put time, money, effort, will and dedication into a project. There isn't even any DISCUSSION ABOUT THAT, you DENSE peoples.

But don't we have the right to point to the paradoxal fact, and it's very obvious too, that either it's LOCAL (x5 ...), and if it's SO LOCAL, then let the prize money be LOCAL too. More money in the pockets of the organizers, they are the ones who deserve it the most to cover the cost of many things that they often pay from their own pockets (trust me, I know ...), if it's SO LOCAL. Or if they want this LAN to be the "good atmosphere" (and I've been to many LAN Parties in my life, so I know this sort of LANs, and they are great btw), friendly kind of LAN's, why not take part of this big prize money and make a "buffet" with free drinks, snacks, etc ... for peoples attending. You can buy tons of "junk food" for 2000 bucks you know ? While keeping a respectable 500$ cash first prize for this LOCAL (x5) LAN. Did I repeat the word LOCAL enought for your taste ?

But no, apparently, for some "very objective" peoples around here, who have absolutely NO PERSONAL INTEREST in this, who also randomly happens to be 99% from scandinavia, it makes LOTS OF SENSE to organize a 25000 SEK (4000$) Prize tournament for a L.O.C.A.L. lan where only people living close can come, because "Heh ! It's BYOC, you know ?". Makes lots of sense, right ? And nobody should even dare speak about it or even pronounce a word in that direction, right ? Throw your brain out the windows, and smile, right ?

Shhhhhh, don't ruin it for the Dota's swedish mafia, you're disturbing them while they grab some easy cash after a few "walk in the park" kind of games, and abuse a few good-willed and good-hearted but naive LAN organisators, that apparently are ignorant of the full scale of the Dota Scene, and the HUGE SKILL level difference that exist between international and local teams, and don't realize the paradox in all this, and to say the least, "the lack of proper fund managment" going on around this tournament.

That's what I'm criticizing, you hypocrits. I'm not against a Dota LAN taking place, who the fuck could be ? Anybody who thinks 2 seconds know this. But you cannot have it both ways. Either the lan is LOCAL, so let the prizes money be local too and lighten up the burden on the organizer OR it's NOT local (and I don't see how it could be, this stuff have been advertised EVERYWHERE ! How the fuck do they want it to stay local, except with this BYOC bullshit ?! It's even in the frontpage of Icefrog's PLAYDOTA.COM, go see for yourself, since yesterday), and if it's not local, and the prize money and worldwide internet adverstising certainly aren't, then i say IT'S A WASTE OF GOOD OPPORTUNITY AND GOOD RESSOURCES TO LIMIT THE ATTENDANCE TO ONLY THE SWEDISH MAFIA WITH THIS BYOC BULLSHIT, AND EVERYBODY KNOWS IT. 1 + 1 = 2. End of story.

The funniest thing I've read in that page, is some Einstein who came here and said to me, lying throu his teeth "renting a computer is only 30$ in sweden, blablabla we rock so much". Ok Dude. Then IT's EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS if it's true. How come they do not substract 30 x 10 = 300$ from the total 4000$ Prize money and rescale all the prices (the end result wouldn't even be noticable for the winning team, it would still be good money) and ripe the fruits of ALL THIS ORGANISING EFFORTS THEY HAVE PUT ON, because wether international or local people attend this lan, trust me, at the end of the day the work and effort for the organisators is THE SAME. It's a FUCKING WASTE of a good opportunity, that's what I'm trying to explain for the 10th times to those hypocrits ...

But don't worry, the "Dota swedish mafia" perfectly knows this, and that's why they will keep posting and attacking me.

Wth, can't someone just ban that troll blah278 from this thread? I mean, there's now a Dota tournament open for all that wants to attend.
And then the people organizing this thing gets trashtalked for not arranging computers for everybody...

Please manner the fuck up, instead of just giving sponsors etc more reasons not to take Dota seriously!

Nice initiative by the Hazard organizers. This year it will be a local low level tournament that is basically a way to hand out to the "top" swedish teams some easy prizepool money, but one day it can grow and be a solid addition to the dota world tournament scene.

Blah is definitely NOT a troll. He has some very valid points. He even spelled it out in a 5678-word essay. Any tourny is good for DotA, so I won't complain, probably cause Sweden is so fooking far away from where I live. Even if I win that BYOC tourni, it would not pay for my expenses going there. Hopefully it will be a success, so next year it can be a biger event. Thx Sweden, good job Blah for pointing out the minor flaws in the tourny. Mb, who knows, it might be a massive compettitive tourny with highly skilled teams giving RR replays. Doubt it though. Anyway...DotA FTW!!!
