SMM prize pool and tournament format announced

Posted by Terrence "MrBlue" Wong 2 years ago

With just a few weeks to go until SMM DotA starts, the organizers have released the full prize pool for this grand event along with the tournament format. Besides offering a huge monetary payoff, Seagate and SteelSeries will be sponsoring their products to the winners of this event. The organizers have also used a very unique tournament system due to the amount of teams participating.

Seagate decided to sponsor their range of high quality hard drive for the lucky winners. While SteelSeries, the famous gaming peripheral manufacturer, have sponsored a whole line of products, from their Siberia Headsets to their keyboards and mouse.

To ensure that high quality matches are played throughout SGNDT, the organizers have decided to adopt a very unique tournament format. Below is an explanation from the organizers:

-The tournament format for SGNDT 09 will be separated into three phases, the first being the qualifying stage, followed by the group stage and the finally the playoffs.

-Firstly, all teams who previously place second, third and fourth in their respective State qualifiers will be separated into groups of eight. Each group containing four teams. All teams in each group will battle out in a Round Robin format against each other to gain the highest score in their group. The team with the highest score will the proceed to the Group Stage.

-Next, the best of each group from the Qualifying Stage will proceed to the Group stage where the champions of each State along with all International teams will be waiting for their challengers. All State champions, International teams and the best from the group stages will be seeded into groups of five. Again, a Round Robin will be played and the two teams with the highest score will be in for the playoffs.

-Finally, the playoffs will be played in a Double Elimination brackets. Known to some as the Winner/Losers Bracket. This is where all teams will start off in the Winners Bracket and when a team loses, they will move down to the Losers Bracket. If they suffer another loss in the Losers Bracket, they will be eliminated from the tournament. In the end, the winners from the Winners Bracket will face off with the winners from the Losers Bracket in a best of three game with the winners from the Winner Bracket having a one game advantage.

With so much up for grabs, along with such a demanding tournament system, it will come as no surprise as we see all participating teams training long and hard for SMM DotA. Stay tuned as GosuGamers provide up to date coverage of SMM DotA.

pretty low prizes considering 8.3k has to be split on 5 persons ...
today TSL2 (starcraft) was announced, and the first place gets $10k, which is only one person. And that's even an online tournament.
I also think 320GB is nothing!;P 500GB is okay, 1TB shall be what the first gets!

anyways, gl every1!

first of all, for so many huge prizes tournament been offered for the past few years all around the world. But most of the gamers did not receive the prize money after they won.. that's pretty sad.. and for the winners of ESWC last year as well. SMM always guaranteed on the payout for the prize money, needless to wait for 6-12 months. Prize money will be paying out after the event within 14days. And SMM prize money been increasing from year to year which never disappointing participants for the past 3 years, next year of coz the prize money will be increase again.. so stay tuned..

tinyrock ur my favourite poster!!
it seems that half of dota players are blind or just talking and never watched a rep! but u know what i mean! im german i have nothing against kuro and mym for eu-team they are good, but this fanboism and hyping get on my nerves.
Asia > europe we will see this. And the fact that just 1 team (MYM) join SMM doesnt say that we cannot compare? MYM is the strongest team in europe no doubt about that (atm) fnatic has the potential with Loda (not drunken) to own them.
1. CT
2. Kingsurf
3. CH
ps: ERYC FRAUD

Yes SMM paid their prize money pretty fast. Its healthy for the community & considering it should be this year's largest prized pool Dota tournament!

#34 smm 2 years ago
#31 no, all prize money will be wire to their account. We can't just bring 100k cash to the event.

dont be sarcastic... we will know who is better right after the tourny.... pointless for us to argue it here... also thx to SMM, seagate and steelseries for sponsoring...
hope next year will have larger price pool....

MYM is a 1:100 underdog in this Tournament. We're not gonna talk about skill here, im sure that they can give a good fight to any asian team out there.
But, there are so many good chinese teams, that everything then a chinese win will be a suprise.
We all know how hard chinese people train to win.
My bet goes to cD, CH or ehome finishing first.
Still, i hope Kingsurf, AEON, ct and MYM are strong enough to stop china from taking the Dota world again

I can't understand how pro players are payed so bad.

They should make a worldcup or something and show on tv i would definitely watch it and then with sponsors on tv this business would grow easily. Did anyone had this idea before? Put TobiWan as shoutcaster and show matches on Foxtel.
