Announcement: Dreamhack Winter '09

Posted by Philipp "ereskigal" Hartmann 2 years ago

Dreamhack is about to begin, and GosuGamers will let you know all the important details. Two times a year Jönköping opens their gates, to welcome gamers from all over the world.

11.000 people are estimated this year and like every year DreamHack Winter will be a festival with lots of actions and an awesome atmosphere.

Like last year DotA got a spot reserved at the huge cinema, and the finals will be played at the best time for every timezone on Saturday 16:00 CET. The finalists will play on the stage of that cinema, and the game will be streamed by DreamHack.

GosuGamers will host the DotA tournament as custom, and you shall know everything, that is known by now.

Location: Jönköping, Sweden
Date: 26. November 2009 - 29. November 2009
Fee: 820 SEK (~ 82€) for all days
Prize money: 50.000 SEK (cash + Hardware)

But enough of the general information, here are the ruleset for the DreamHack Winter 2009 DotA tournament.

Ruleset
Starting time: 26. November 13:00 CET
Grand final time: 28. November 16:00 CET
Map version: DotA Allstars v. 6.64
Item restrictions: Pipe banned
Format: Double Elimination, bo1. All three Finals are bo3.

Version: 6.64
Patch: 1.24
Gamemode: 5vs5 -cm
Hero bans: None
Format: Double Elimination, best out of one. Loser Bracket Final, Winner Bracket Final and Grand Final are played best of three.
Server: GG-client/Hamachi/Battle.net+LC

Contact

Every team MUST join IRC #dreamhack.dota to be able to contact each other. Use the SAME clantag and nickname as you signed up with.

Restrictions

The item "Khadgar's Pipe of Insight" is forbidden.

Registering

To sign up you will need a tournament password. This is to ensure that only teams present at Dreamhack participate. This rule applies to all players on the team. More information on how you will get access to this password will be announced shortly.

A team needs at least five players. If a team consists of more than five players they are allowed to switch players between each game. All players must be added to the teams roster when registering.

NOTE: You register as a team, not individually. The team leader registers your team and adds the rest of the players to the roster.

Team leaders are responsible for uploading results, checking the brackets for new opponents and ensuring that his team's players are present and mannerly.
Please pay extra attention when registering to make sure that your row and seat is accurate. This is for your own help when we need to contact you.

Server

All games should be played using GG-Client (Guide). As some games will be streamed it is mandatory to join the GG-Client GosuGamers DotA Tournament Room (which is located under Leagues in the War3 TFT RPG -> Europe) to make things easier for the persons who will stream the game to contact you.

If for some reason you cannot make GG-Client work, and your game will not be streamed - try to agree with your opponents on a different platform, i.e. Hamachi (Guide) or Battle.net with /listchecker (LC).(Guide). If you do not know how to set up GG-Client, Hamachi or LC read the guides above or ask your opponent to help you out. Hamachi or LC give approximately similar ping reduction compared to regular Battle.net games, hence we leave it up to players’ decision which platform suits their case best.

NOTE: Playing on battle.net with LC requires a valid CD-Key. Make sure that all players on your team have that in case you are unable to play on GG-Client or Hamachi.

Reporting

The team that lost has to report the game on the webpage. If you lost in winner brackets, you will face a new opponent in loser brackets.

If the losing team did not report the winning team will have to notify a referee and submit a replay of the game to der-hartmann [@] web [dot] de. Alternatively, you can take a print screen of the end game screen or the enemy team forfeiting.

Walkover

A walkover will be given if one of the players has not showed up 20 minutes after the match was supposed to start. Every round has a specific time set to it, which is when the match should start. Both teams shall be ready to start by the start of the round. If a team is close to be 'walkovered' more than once he or she might be given a warning.

Only referees can give walkovers.

Complaints

If you suspect that your opponent has broken the rules you have to submit a complaint to a referee.
You are NOT ALLOWED to submit a complaint if you:
• Have started your next game.
• It was more than an hour since your game ended.

Bugs

Bug using may result in a default loss.
Activating the enemies team glyphe of fortification is forbidden.(e.g. with a crow)
Blocking Base entrances with spells is forbidden (e.g. Fissure).

Warnings and Bans

A referee is authorised to:
• Reverse the result of a game
• Revoke the result of a game (the game will be replayed)
• Give a team a warning
• Ban a team
Two warnings will result in a ban. If you are banned you are not allowed to continue playing in the tournament.

The referee has full authority to give the verdict at his/her own discretion.

Examples:
A warning might be given to a team not following the item limitations. If that team won the game, a referee may also reverse the result of the game.
NOTE: If this happens in the winner brackets the team given the loss will continue in the loser brackets.
A ban might be given to a team manipulating the game, e.g. by using maphack.

Third Party Programs
AutohpBars, AutoHotkey, Ventrilo or any other programs filling the same purpose are allowed. Using any other program will result in a ban.

If you are uncertain whether a program is allowed or not, ask a referee.

Observing

Only referees and streamers may observe games.

Game Mode

All games must be played in -cm mode.

Replays

YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO SAVE THE REPLAY, regardless of your team winning or losing.

You have to pay the tickets, if you want to participate. You are not free of charge while participating in a tournament. You also have to bring your own computer as it is a BYOC event. There is no possibility to rent a computer at DreamHack Winter.

Are you serious, you asked players if they enjoyed an item that gives 400 magic AoE defense - of course no one likes playing against it, but that doesn't mean that it is imbalanced. Basing it on turtling just shows the inadequate understanding of the game your administration has. Joy of viewing? Tell me why gank teams no longer have an initiating magic AoE defense to engage in teamfights, ridiculous, this hurts ganking strategies far more than allowing Pipe would.

You only considered what removing Pipe would do for gameplay and hero selection, a biased look on things when you don't look at the implications of keeping it. You don't strike me as "not smart," simply ignorant.

"Are you serious, you asked players if they enjoyed an item that gives 400 magic AoE defense - of course no one likes playing against it,"

Good you read carefully what I wrote and got it correct -.-' ....

I didn't ask if they wanna play against it. Of course noone wants to play against it. But that wasn't even the question. Sure if you ban pipe you rebalance the game, but I think we have to live with it. And as I said, we discussed every aspect of it, I just did not write anything down here. I think there is a reason why it is called "internal Forum". We discussed it, and that was the outcome. I only posted the arguments WHY we DENY it. I do not feel like postinga complete discussion log here. Trust me it is nearly 50% pro and con. Sure there are advantages for both ways.

#43, so the decision is primarily an "entertainment" decision and not based on balance, at least that enables me to understand the decision, but I don't agree with it nonetheless.

The notion that Pipe inherently causes turtling/that pipe is a turtle item and that Pipe exorbitantly benefits turtling simply is highly questionable, Pipe banning will, most likely, not cause less turtling either since the factors which lead to turtling, the reasons for turtling have nothing to do with the Pipe item at all. The triggers for turtling are independent of pipe.

If a team wants/needs to turtle than they will, regardless of Pipe being part of the game or not and pipe does NOT overly benefit turtling as I have pointed out in my previous post already (ability to decide when to take a fight).

Fragster recently published an article which questioned the "hate" on turtling. It might not be the most pleasant thing to watch, but nonetheless it is part of the game and of equal significance and just like AoE or ganking, turtling will always, naturally again, be part of the game. Comparison: The italian football playstyle Catenaccio might not be as appealing as the English Kick-and-Rush, but it is a valid playstyle which has its interesting points, which can be admired (endurance, discipline, whatever) and which can be just as successful as any other (not more successful).

Favouring a specific playstyle is biased, I think you are aware of that, giving a certain playstyle an advantage is unnecessary. Actually banning pipe does not reward the ganking playstyle since Pipe is far less powerful in a gank situation as compared to a clash/teamfight, it only keeps rewarding the overextensive use of AoE strats which has been the dominant playstyle (everywhere actually, not just Euro) for a long time and which hindered the use of single target/put single target at a severe disadvantage.

I can also not follow your Ravens vs TLT argument at all, they played 59d at DH S09 which is extremely different to the .60 era and back then Pipe didn't even exist!

When we start to subordinate game mechanics/game depth/ability to adept/!skill factors! and game development to entertainment value (actually not even that, we only "assume" that it will be more entertaining if we ban it) just to feed the masses then we start to sell out. Then we lack respect for the game, the "sport" we practice and engage in and that we all love so much.

PS: I apologize for the "expected to be smarter than that" comment, I should have phrased it differently/better and less offensive but due to my initial anger I didn't. Sry for that.

PPS: I think many many people are still stuck with the early version of pipe from .60/61/62. There was a Wc3 update due to a potential exploit which delayed a dota patch and during that period people started to build up the "hate" for pipe because at that point it definitely "was" imba due to the possiblity to stack the effect. In .63 pipe was hit be the nerf-hammer real hard, but people apparently ignored it due to the "trauma" they suffered from.

Who ever said turtling was bad? It maybe be boring for people to watch but sometimes it's necessary to turtle in order to win.

#56: Hmm I do not 100% agree with you on the "pipe" thing, but I also do not want to get an never-ending-discussion here. So sorry to abort it here. Pipe will be banned for this DH, and we try it out. Why not?

And to Ravens vs TLT, if you read it again I think you will see that it was only indirect connected to the pipe.

I have to admit that my BS detector is still buzzing like crazy about the claim of 8 pro DotA players who stated that they simply love to turtle.

"Pipe will be banned for this DH, and we try it out. Why not?"

You mean, you don't try it out with pipe:). And I have stated at length why this should not be the case. But well, nothing else but to accept it, although it is disappointing.

#64: You'd better hope that they've fixed the technical glitches when they try to cast the games from a different location. When the players are on stage everything is groovy, when they're in play-area and they cast it on stage things goes to hell in a hurry. At least it did last year.

It was kinda powerful with so many hundred people all watching the same game in that conference hall, man it was packed during some games.

@Chairrider

You say the factors that lead to turtling are independent of pipe. While this is actually true, and a good point, turtling is made much more appealing by pipe, because it makes it easier to do. If you get behind early game, you can build a pipe and try to hold out for late game. Which greatly lessens the effect of the bad early game. Without pipe, if you mess up your early game, it's a lot harder to come back from. And so the team who played well early, or who outpicked you, should win from the advantageous position.

So it does have an -indirect- influence on the decision. No?

simply put a time limit for each game and the audiance will stay. No one wanna stay for 2 hours or more to see a final, which is the result of bo3 dota games.

Who is the hatguy? I've been to Dreamhack a few times and never seen him :/
edit: nvm, google is my friend
