SMM 2010 - My Experience
Created 6th December 2010 18:10 (Updated: 8th December 2010 02:24)

Having some fun before the hectic day begins

Hi guys, I'm La_DottA/WJBF. Barely 3 days ago, I was at e@Curve where I was part of the GosuGamers coverage team in SMM 2010.

I missed the first day due to work (I work for a local newspaper) and could only make it the next day.

Damansara is 30 minutes away from where I live in Kuala Lumpur. Driven by my dad, I finally arrived at the Royale Bintang Hotel at around 9.30am.

I made my way to room 801 where I met MrBlue for the first time. But you know what, I felt like we knew each other for a long time (probably after working together online for over a month).

After chatting for about 15 minutes, we went down to enjoy a complimentary breakfast. As we dug into the grub, I spotted team TYJ.LGD with my own eyes for the first time in my life. Believe me, it was like meeting your favourite pop stars!

Although I didn't manage to pick up the courage to greet them, watching them from a distance was still a pleasure nonetheless.

To tell you the truth, carrying a backpack filled with notebooks and a 4kg laptop can be very tiring. Thankfully, the SMM venue was just a stone's throw away from the hotel and we trudged along the esplanade.

Already we spotted some of the biggest names in DotA walking in the same direction: StarsBoba, Nirvana.Cherry, EHOME, Mineski, you name it. To me, they were larger than life.

Compared to last year's SMM, the venue size had shrunk considerably. It reminded me of SMM 2008 in Times Square KL. Still, there was still a nice spot for the media to converge and set up our laptops.

How was it a nice spot? 1. Vantage point: In front of us was the gaming island. Behind us was the main stage. This means nothing can escape our sights.

2. Well, it just feels cool to be in the thick of things!

The first round of games started that morning and we (MrBlue, MY.MiSeRy, myself) could cope pretty well. But things got pretty confusing as results started pouring in.

We had to check the tables frequently, update the live blog as often as we can, take care of the GosuBets, take pictures, collect replays as soon as games ended (for you guys!), and conduct interviews. I was put in charge of live updates while MrBlue handled pretty much everything else.

I'd like to take this chance to thank the GosuCrew who have been working their butts off at home even though they were not on site. They made things a lot easier. Also to MrBlue for his invaluable LAN experience from last year.

Speaking of interviews, it was really fun conducting them and I had the great pleasure of interviewing Mineski.Grounds. I'd like to let you guys know that they (Mineski) take the fans very very seriously and were very enthusiastic to get in touch with you, one way or another. They LOVE you!

On a side note, hyhy was asking someone what hero was being picked on the screen (LED screen is not clear, tiny hero pics are hard to make out) but I forgot which game. That someone (maybe Eryc) answered ES but in fact it was Batrider. So I corrected him. Hyhy said: “Oh really? Batrider? Thanks dude.” Orgasm!

I also had the opportunity to chat with MuShI. After his SMM fiasco with team CCM, he looked dejected and low on morale. Nonetheless, he said this: "This is me, a gamer. I have my ups and downs but SMM will definitely not undo the legacy I've built."

MuShI tries to pose and smile for the camera but everyone knows how he was really feeling that moment

Another thing I'd like to add is the electrifying atmosphere. Live stage matches were so enjoyable: Tobi and Kelly were doing their magic and the crowd showed so much enthusiasm!

After the epic LGD/EHOME match, Tobi came over to the island to watch Nirvana.my vs iG-Ice and squatted next to me. To my amazement, he was whispering a silent shoutcast to himself... so soft that only I could hear it!! My God, this is what you call being in the zone. He loves DotA so much. Mind you, he was sweating profusely and still panting from the previous game.

I've known Tobi online for over a year now, some of you might remember my interview with him on myMYM. But it was good to finally meet him in real life (love his new style btw)!

I also liked how the fans didn't choose a side to support. Take the epic LGD vs EHOME match for example. When LGD scored kills, they cheered and clapped. When EHOME won a crucial battle, they approved with rounds of applause and deafening yells of 'NICE!'

All of this is true, except for the game between SB and Ladies. Everyone went wild when the ladies scored their first kill, when POTM's arrow killed the Tiny, when Spectre scored a double kill. I was afraid the fans would make fun of the girls instead. Thank you, the fans. The event would only have been half as fun were it not for your unwavering support.

Day 2 ended at almost 1 am. There were no spectators left but some LB matches were still running. Even had time to play 3 rounds of 1v1 games with MrBlue! *slaps face for not saving replays*

Then the SMM Head Marshall asked if he could sleep with us that night. I've known him personally for a few years now and finally I got to sleep with him. Yippee!

All I can say is that it wasn't a pleasant sleep (3 dudes sharing a Queen-size bed, 1 didn't bathe) but I commiserate with MrBlue who was sandwiched by us both!

The rest, as they say, is history. Day 3 ended with a high note with EHOME regaining their SMM title after defeating defending champions LGD in a final which was attended by almost 1000 people.

I think I speak for everyone who came to support this year's event. Good job to SMM for such efficient management. Although they were plagued by countless PC problems and tight schedules, they managed to pull through and put on a good show.

The only downside? Some gamers tried to sneak out Razer gear. So this is how you repay SMM for providing such nice gear for you guys to compete? Shame on you.

Most importantly, thank you the DotA fans all around the world who made this all possible. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to bring as much of SMM as possible to your homes. If given another chance next year, I promise to double my efforts and do much better!

Special shoutout to OwL OwL from PlayDotA who had to tolerate sitting beside me. I know I have bugged you non-stop for 24 hours :D

Fix your news link please. People can't access that news from the headline. Thanks.
