Are Roles Necessary?
Created 1st March 2010 20:57 (Updated: 1st March 2010 20:59)

After playing a pretty fun match with my team captain, I've noticed something. Our team had no carriers, and was composed by 5 gankers. Leshrac, Slayer, Maiden, Zeus and Shaker. The other team was pretty much well composed by a carrier, some gankers, a support and a semi-carrier.

Normally, the role-balanced team would take the advantage, which, on the other hand, was far from what happened. Our early-game was by far better than theirs, and their lanes were totally destroyed by our spellcasters.

So, are roles really that important? Or maybe a well-done strategy is just better? Our mid/late game was really good, as well. Earthshaker, Zeus and Leshrac all had aghanim's scepter and Kelen's, not to mention some Guinsoo's and Eul's on our team. That pretty much won the game for us.

Still, it was a great and overall balanced game, and I wouldn't call it an outpick for either side.

Just a quick tip, though, try to base your pick in a strategy, instead of the Role-criteria that amateur captains tend to base themselves.

Good gaming, C&C guys.

The Diversity of Picking
Created 23rd February 2010 20:48 (Updated: 23rd February 2010 20:48)

We've seen interesting picks going on in the competitive DotA world. We've seen Puppey picking Goblin Techies for Kuroky in Blight.int's defeat against TheSHIT!. We've seen a lot of strong lanes, followed by roaming heroes ganking in the early stages of the game. These rather diverse picking strategies were, in the past, only seen in the Asian leagues/championships. Is the rest of the world growing mature, in terms of DotA?

Of course technical picks are fairly common in the competitive world. They are guaranteed of working, aren't they? Are they?

The mind game growth in picking is fascinating, in terms of using different, underused heroes and strategies. This leaves the other team unprepared, and makes your team less predictable, which is pretty desirable. To be honest, I really enjoyed Blight.int's gameplay with a solo Goblin Techies. Not the daftest of strategies, but it was worth the effort, I suppose.

Another thing that has come to my attention is the exchanged roles of heroes. In an amateur league in Brazil, I've seen a Broodmother babysitting a Slardar. People would usually find that useless and stupid, but I see it with other eyes. It was a Captain's Draft, and there was only 1 support hero in the pool, Warlock. He was first-picked, leaving no other supporting possibilities... besides improvising. I'm really fond of improvising, to be honest. DotA is no technical, predictable game, thus calling for some improvising is pretty acceptable.

So here's my message to all of you:

- Widen your possibilities, pick differently. Post here your picks and ideas, maybe even a replay. It's pretty nice to see some different stuff!

C&C, guys. :)
