M5 World Championship: Group B is filled with underdogs

Having looked into Group A for the M5 Wildcard Tournament, we now focus on Group B – a stellar group of four teams hungry to reach the main event.

While Group A at the upcoming M5 Wildcard Tournament features two teams which are fairly well-known and some players too – Group B could be seen as the complete opposite, with four teams that have barely had any time to prove themselves… until now. For some teams, this will be their first-ever chance to prove themselves on the international Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Stage, while others will relish an opportunity to give their region another challenger at the main event.

Group B’s hopefuls

Imperio
Team Lilgun
KeepBest Gaming
Umbrella Squad

Imperio came into the Wildcard Tournament as the third seed from the LATAM Liga 2023 event, having already seen both Bigetron Sons and RRQ Akira qualify to the main event. This means that should the Argentinian organisation manage to hold its own and come out on top, three teams from South America will be present at the M5 World Championship. Nearly every player on this roster has not seen the light of the M-Series, however, with a stand-in for the event in the form of the Peruvian, Stephe, they will have some sort of experience for the Wildcard.

Next on the cards is Team Lilgun, who comes in as the Mongolian representative for the first time ever to the M-Series. While the team does not have a lot of experience on the international stage, they have been seen earlier this year during the World Cyber Games where they met ECHO – but they have also played in multiple tournaments where they took first place, including triumph over Falcon Esports at the Phygital Games #9 this year. Lilgun has the chance to create some chaos in this tournament, especially in a group with smaller teams.

This year sees the CIS region returning to the M-Series, after missing out on M4 – but this time around, they have a chance to bring in two teams to the main event. Runners-up to Deus Vult at MCC Season 2, Umbrella Squad will be hoping to bring the Russian playstyle to the forefront of the Wildcard Tournament. Without any experience on the M-Series stage, Umbrella could utilise their “darkhorse” trump card to come out on top.

Last, but certainly not least, KeepBest Gaming is coming into the Wildcard Tournament as China’s first-ever team to the M-Series. With the region only recently joining in on the MLBB fun, KBG is hoping that they can do what the region does best in many esports events. However, this is still a tough group for any team involved, and without much experience behind them, they can only really hope for upsets and take advantage of non-meta strategies.

All-in-all, Group B features a lot of darkhorse teams with not a whole bunch of information around them. From our side, we can see Lilgun taking a spot at M5, possibly, while Imperio is also a very strong challenger for the Wildcard. It will be interesting to see just who will take the reigns in Group B and come out on top of the Wildcard Tournament.
