Blogs \ The Diversity of Picking
khev.bra @ 23rd February 2010 20:48 (Read 652 times).
We've seen interesting picks going on in the competitive DotA world. We've seen Puppey picking Goblin Techies for Kuroky in Blight.int's defeat against TheSHIT!. We've seen a lot of strong lanes, followed by roaming heroes ganking in the early stages of the game. These rather diverse picking strategies were, in the past, only seen in the Asian leagues/championships. Is the rest of the world growing mature, in terms of DotA?

Of course technical picks are fairly common in the competitive world. They are guaranteed of working, aren't they? Are they?

The mind game growth in picking is fascinating, in terms of using different, underused heroes and strategies. This leaves the other team unprepared, and makes your team less predictable, which is pretty desirable. To be honest, I really enjoyed Blight.int's gameplay with a solo Goblin Techies. Not the daftest of strategies, but it was worth the effort, I suppose.

Another thing that has come to my attention is the exchanged roles of heroes. In an amateur league in Brazil, I've seen a Broodmother babysitting a Slardar. People would usually find that useless and stupid, but I see it with other eyes. It was a Captain's Draft, and there was only 1 support hero in the pool, Warlock. He was first-picked, leaving no other supporting possibilities... besides improvising. I'm really fond of improvising, to be honest. DotA is no technical, predictable game, thus calling for some improvising is pretty acceptable.

So here's my message to all of you:

- Widen your possibilities, pick differently. Post here your picks and ideas, maybe even a replay. It's pretty nice to see some different stuff!

C&C, guys. :)

Yea, i noticed that these days, even in some official events, some teams play -cd and to my surprise, my favourite local team, TEG, seems to pown in "that department".

Watching games with same picks over and over again gets boring over time. TeG does pick differently sometimes, yes, I enjoy that :)
