Blogs \ StarCraft 2 BETA Day 5
ReiKo @ 21st February 2010 22:19 (Read 803 times).

This time folks - a bit about new gaming platform called Battle.Net 2.0. This new eSports platform will in future, by Blizzard sayings - implement Facebook and Twitter services. Now, many social features and singleplayer features are disabled. As what I can see - design is pretty, blue color is spot on and it's very fluid and user-friendly. You can access ladder/leagues, your profile, profile of other people (and see how many games they played, which games they played, when and on what map - status on their position on ladder and many more).

Choose your destiny... or maybe will Battle.Net 2.0 choose it for you?

Chat is a bit awkward and I don't find it simplistic enough - it's pain to message people on friends list while you are in game. Also, that "real ID" thing you need to add in order to /f m like in old StarCraft: Brood War is unnecessary in my opinion. Voice in game component is cool and it provides so much more fun but it needs polishing as it holds some turbulence bugs by crushing into your OS. If I'm satasifed with someting - then that's Battle.Net 2.0. Not about it's current state as much as it has real potential to be great multiplayer eSports platform.

Also to mention, I think Blizzard needs to implement channels in final product of Battle.Net 2.0 because people just want to chat with more then 20 people in one room without making so called "party". Now we are just using IRC for this - but this is contradictory to Blizzard statement of having "Battle.Net 2.0 full social/gaming service of great experience". I don't want some people necessary to be in my party so I can talk to them.

All nice and clean. Ready and good to go? Not yet. Hold your horses.

Also, autofind opponent is fine and great but I sometimes want to play ladder game on specific map that I and my opponent agrees on and versus opponent/opponents we chose by ourselves - and of course - for ladder points. That's main things that bugs me in this service.

Another thing that is great is that you get message when you friends are online in very indirect way (or to be precise - suptile way) without bothering you too much - just enough you can see your friend/s are online. You can access BETA website right from the main menu and options that are in that menu regarding the gameplay and service itself are solid, not great but solid at the moment. I'm sure they will add some more. I would really love to see that we can modify looks of our Battle.Net 2.0. That would be big plus for it in my book.

Welcome to the void. No channels.

In manner of steamlike games you get news and headlines regarding StarCraft 2 BETA which is great because you don't need to lurk sites for information - but access it right before you start playing. We will see if they implement autoupdate like in StarCraft 1 what would be really awesome if we are going via "simplistically and automatically road". Also, you can move your "friends" windows that makes me think they will add possibility of modifiying our "gamespace" in Battle.Net 2.0 which would be really cool. Servers at this moment seems pretty fast, didn't have too many lag issues
ergo - server farms seems to be up to level. We will see how will service breath when final product is out and many more people are playing.

Anyway, right now and when I first seen it - Battle.net 2.0 made real impact on me, just like this:

Wooooah, Battle.Net 2.0 will rox if they polish and add some things. 내가 보라!
