Blogs \ SC2 beta!
Lord_of_Chaos @ 17th February 2010 23:38 (Read 2343 times).
So, I'm one of the lucky few who so far have their hands on the beta. I just played a game on the new battle.net, my first ever sc2 game played from home. Never really understood that this day would actually come! This is AMAZING! Trying to collect my thoughts to write something worthwile home.

First, my reaction to seeing the "SC2 BETA LAUNCHED" on the front page wasn't as big as I thought it would be. Most likely because this is bad timing fr me. Just got home from training, tired, really need to sleep. But of course I can't sleep with this. Then it finally sunk in to me: THE MOTHERFUCKING SC2 BETA HAS ARRIVED AND YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT! I logged on to my b.net account and there it was. Manage SC2 beta. I was the first in the entire GG.net crew who got this. Started spamming some people on facebook, the crew forums and of course the public forums. Fucking amazing stuff, this.

So I download it, and it feels like forever. Finally downloaded, I install it. Once installed, I start the game! FINALLY! First off, fix graphic settings. I'm on a laptop, and it's getting like three years old in May, so it's not the best setup. Still, SC2 runs on it. Just had to scale down some graphics. Also checked the "Disable Windows key" box (love that addition, btw!). Then registering myself, took some time til b.net2 accepted my nickname. I first tried with some variations of LordOfChaos (space or _ was not allowed), but it denied all of them for some reason (bug or someone else already took it, I don't know). So I went with Locray, the nick I usually use when playing on ICCup so that I don't represent GG.net when I play (even I lose my temper sometimes). With this set up, I was able to choose what level of player I was, I think they were "Beginner", "Expert" and "Veteran", with Veteran being the toughest saying something like "Extensive experience within competitive RTS games." Picked Veteran. Started my first game.

First, I've played SC2 before on DreamHack. Almost won myself a second betakey there last event in a SC2 tour. Almost. Doesn't matter now. I happened to play vs basicly only Zerg opponents then, always playing Zerg myself. So I'm used to SC2, these are not my first games.

So I start the game. First impression: Bad graphics (since I scaled them down) and still not perfectly smoothrunning, slight slight lag. But I can live with it. My opponent: Zerg. The map: Some four player map.

The game: I opened up 13pool, 12extractor (the new 12pool 11gas), went for queen asap, then speedlings when gas allowed it and then lair for Roaches (since they own in ZvZ!). I basicly just pumped lings after the initial build, got my queen and made a few more drones for better econ (the Queen has this spawn larvae spell, allowing me to basicly double a hatcheries production capabilities. Protip: USE IT!). Then pumping Roaches when lair and Roach Warren was done. Seemed I didn't actually need Lair for Roaches though, I do recall needing it at DreamHack though, so it's probably changed. Well, sitting on a useless Lair it will at least be good for a later mutalisk switch should it be needed. I basicly pump lings, and roaches (also forgot that roaches cost gas, and had taken drones of gas for more minerals, so mostly pumping lings).

I scout him late. About the time I start my lair. I'm still unused to the new buildings and stuff (takes a few games to get used to them, but give them a chance) so I basicly only pick up that he has a pool and some lings. I steal his gas (he has two so it's kinda useless, but I still wanted to do it). His lings kill my proxygas. I send a ling to see if he moves out, which he does. A pretty big ling force. When his lings arrive at my base my lings, having had time to reinforce while he was running to my base, destoyed his. By then I knew I had the game. After 6-8 roaches and a few more lings I attack and own him up. He GGs.

Sorry for this being jumbled and not wellwritten. It's late, I'm tired, and I'm not really thinking that clearly right now. Just excited! GG.net crew will be bringing you more and more updated. Personally I'll try to fix a livestream account during the weekend and stream some of this sweet sweet future to ya'll! Going back to more SC2 and more nonsleep for tonight!

Who here agrees with me that Lord_of_Chaos picked the "beginner" setting? :D Although 1st game = win is good. Game sounds pretty nice.

How long did your game last?

First game was just 8 minutes. So far I've not played any bw players, so I've basicly faced no resistance. 3-0 so far.
