ESL announces WESA

ESL issued their official announcement of their brand new World eSports Association that was leaked this week.

Reddit exploded into an uproar on Tuesday after an anonymous user posted a leaked image of a poster for an organization called WESA that featured top teams, leading to speculation that it would be an exclusive league created by ESL. That speculation has been proven false however, as the company has now come out with their official statement about WESA, or World eSports Association.

The organization will act as a regulatory body that is co-owned by a number of the top teams in the scene currently: fnatic, Na'Vi, EnVyUs, Virtus.Pro, NiP, G2, mousesports, and FaZe. WESA will attempt to create a standarized set of rules and policies that will apply to all WESA-certified leagues and tournaments, the first of which being the ESL Pro League. The first acting league commissioner for WESA, Pietro Fringuelli, had the following to say about the announcement:

I’m incredibly honoured and excited to join the World Esports Association today, and am looking forward to bringing my years of experience from traditional sports into the world of electronic sports. The formation of WESA, and the growth of the Association in the coming years, will be the critical performance indicators for the entire esports industry - and a real game changer for its every stakeholder.
